Wearing swimsuits became a trend to the point that people actually made a competition for women to wear it in a most beautiful way. It was said to be made popular in the 1880s as bathing costumes in beauty pageants.
These competitions have been a part of some prestigious beauty pageants such as Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss Earth. Some competitions that are related to body improvement such as bodybuilding and modelling feature a bikini segment in their contests.
Nevertheless, people are concerned about the decency of these competitions due to occurrences that almost displayed nudity and do not meet the required standards of the competition.
When Miss World was organized in 1951 by Eric Morley, Kiki Hkansson won and was crowned in a bikini. The pageant featured bikinis at the Festival of Britain where other contestants were threatened to withdraw due to religious reasons.
Since this competition was aired publicly, it was condemned by the people and the Pope. Instead, evening gowns were introduced. They find it offensive to their traditions, norms, beliefs, and also to the human rights of the public.
The bikini segment was prohibited after the controversy. Feminists protested and claimed that the segment does not degrade the values of a woman.
Due to protests from several parts of the world, some still features bikini contest. There are some parts of the world that still does not accept the idea of displaying a womans body that almost leads to nudity.
Countries that are practicing their traditions and religious views, oppose that wearing bikinis do not displays a womans freedom but to actually entertain men. This became a reason why some countries do not allow their contestants to participate in beauty pageants internationally.
Later in 2013, when Miss World was hosted in Indonesia, it was suggested to be cancelled because they believed that a womans body should be covered. Nevertheless, they replaced the bikini into one piece swimsuit and sarong (the traditional attire in Bali.
There are also pageants at that time that are for children which also features a bikini segment. Some protesters describe it as an excuse to cover up sexual exploitation and in violation of the childrens human rights.
It was removed and replaced with an athletic suit instead of bikinis to stop these allegations of child abuse. They believed that it is more appropriate to wear a one piece swimsuit rather than bikinis for beauty pageants.
Wearing a one piece swimsuit became a standard for some competitions of today due to its style and design. It does not cover the whole body but it does not also reveals too much skin. Some of its variants are combinations of other styles that fit the purpose of concealing some skin.
As of today, some countries are open to compromise and join beauty pageants for the sake of peace and unity. They are slowly embracing the idea of having a swimsuit contest in beauty pageants. Some people still believed that wearing a one piece swimsuit is okay as long as it does not offend the public.
