The one piece swimsuit covers the torso, as opposed to bikinis that leave the midriff completely bare, except perhaps the back. It had a significant part in the history of in academic swimming events.
Initially in the history of swim wears, all women swim apparels were more modest before the 1960�s when two piece swimsuits and bikinis took trend. The evolution of swimwear dates back to the mid-1800s where full-length dresses were worn in the water. These types of swimwear have the sole purpose of wading in the water, and not entirely for swimming. Due to religious influences, legs were covered with skirts that weighed down with lead and bloomers or stockings worn underneath.
In the early 1900s, the popular princess style was donned. It was a one piece swimsuit with a knee-length high skirt and stockings. police patrols were actually roaming the shores to stop women who showed too much calf.
After the World War I, in the mid-1900s, a more daring one piece swimsuit made its debut in the form of the maillot. It was a leotard-inspired suit that covered part of the thigh, but sagged when wet. Its popularity was associated to Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman, during her arrest on a Boston beach for indecent exposure of her arms, legs and neck with the maillot. Her arrest created public outrage leading to the acceptance of the style for women. The maillot style then came to be advertised as �The Annette Kellerman�.
In the 1920s and 1930s, more decorative designs were integrated into the one piece swimsuits as bathhouses and spas became the go-to places for women and sun tanning as the famous past time. Specifically in the 1930s, one piece swimsuits had necklines that plunged at the back. The sleeves were gone, the sides were carved and tightened and shoulder straps were lowered to maximize tanning.
By 1960�s, the bikini became famous. However, as of today, it is still considered immodest which makes the Olympic women�s swimming team and other international swimming events prohibit the two piece.
In the 1980�s, sporty styles of one piece swimsuits were marketed by the Baywatch cast. These one piece swimsuits had a more athletic and fuller-breasted pattern on it.
The 1990�s one piece swimsuits had more designer-styles on it. It was a choice between glamorous styles and the minimalist. The glamorous ones were heavy on gold, satin and logos while the minimalist had more clean lines.
During the modern times, in the 2000s, sporty triangle tops made its comeback with hipster bottoms. Strap styles include the racerback, fastback, and flyback. More recently, in the 2010s, ladylike cuts from the 1950�s were seen on trendsetter Taylor Swift and the comeback of old-school one piece swimsuits featured more modern styles like ruffles and scallop necklines.
As of today, one piece swimsuits are getting sexier. They have more styles to choose from. Some of the hottest one piece swimsuit trends include bold stripes, denim fabrics, high cuts, off-the-shoulder styles, cutaway silhouette that focuses on a chic high neckline. Most times, one pieces have been paired with jeans to be worn during daytime or casual days on the street. Once again, the one piece swimsuit is trending.
