There's no better way to put it .. Hands down, one of the best ways to boost your authority as an entrepreneur or coach is to host your own live events. They are an opportunity to show off your expertise, provide social proof ( if you have guest speakers they'll do it for you) and get your name in front of more potential clients and customers.
So why are you hesitating? What's standing in your way?
If you're like most people (I imagine you are) .. It's FEAR.
How would fear play out for you? Here's some examples:
Fear of not being able to draw speakers.
Fear of not being able to sell enough tickets.
Fear of putting yourself out there and saying out loud: "I'm hosting an event."
If you missed my latest post on fear, you can check it out here.
Here's a secret most people don't realize. You don't have to do a 300-person event on your first try. It doesn't mean that your vision should change. If you have dreams of holding a large event someday than keep your focusing on your dream, but that's not where you need to begin.
A small, intimate venue that holds less than 50 people would be a fantastic first step towards your end-result.
It's not an admission that you CAN'T hold a large event but look at it from this perspective: If you only have to sell 50 tickets, your stress level will be minimized and you've less pressure to perform.
Your out-of-pocket expenses will be less, there's fewer people to please and less equipment to worry about.
Yet you'll still have the huge benefit of saying "I'm hosting an event."
Here's another hidden benefit: This live event will lay the groundwork for any and all future events.
"Don't wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great." – Orison Swett Marden
With the experience you've gained, it will much easier to add live group coaching or mastermind events to your programs. There will be less worry over managing all the parts and pieces, simply because "you've been there, done that" more than once! There are more than one form of live events, so don't panic and think you have to commit yourself to a multi-day, multi-speaker conference.
Your first event could come in the form of a local Meetup, or a half-day workshop held at your favorite local venue or it might even be a free mastermind session tacked on to a larger event you are attending.
The most important first step is to get your feet wet and pave the way to bigger and better events further down the road.
Make sure as you are planning and holding your event to keep these points in mind:
Promote and talk up your event as if it's the newest and greatest thing in your industry. Be truthful, be energetic and positive about it.
Get testimonials from attendees while you're at the event. Set up a table with the forms to fill out. Don't wait until they get home, because we are forgetful creatures.
Take notes. What worked, what didn't, what could have been improved? If you have a VA who is assisting you, they can compile them for you after the event.
Keep it simple. Don't try to host a multi-day, multi-room event for your first time out. Put that on your "vision" list instead.
In the end, the most important point about your first live event is to ... JUST DO IT.
Take that deep breath, step outside your comfort zone and enter the world of event hosts.
You'll find once you're there, your entrepreneurial or coaching credibility increases rapidly!
