Any first-time fish owner needs proper guidance about aquarium setup, equipment and other tips to successfully assemble their aquarium. You'll need to have this essential equipment:
Fish tank (20 gallons or larger, not exceeding 55 gallons)
Aquarium stand
Filter (user-friendly, low-maintenance types like the power filter)
Fully-submersible heater (with adjustable thermostat) and thermometer
Gravel
Dechlorinator (if you aren't using distilled water)
Master test kit (either in liquid variant or strips)
Sealant (in case of leaks)
Aquarium plants/decorations
Once you have these items ready, follow these steps:
1. Place your aquarium stand and tank
Choose a spot that isn't too exposed to sunlight. Position your stand a few inches off the wall to allow space for your filter and make sure it isn't near anything that can either expose it to dust or change the water temperature. Make sure that the floor is sturdy enough to support its filled weight and that there is an electric outlet within reach.
2. Install your filter and add the gravel
Follow your filter's installation instructions carefully. This varies between brands and filter types. Rinse the gravel with clean water before adding it in. It should cover the bottom of the tank at a height of 3 inches.
3. Install your plants and other accessories/decorations
Do this carefully so as not to disturb the gravel too much, and make sure your placements are final because once you fill the tank with water it's not recommended to move anything around. Make sure the plants are firmly placed.
4. Add water and install the heater
Add just a few inches of water (about 2-4 inches) and spend the next 30 minutes checking all sides for leaks. You can use a sealant to fix them. When that's done, you can already fill up your tank until 1/3 full and assess the look of your submerged plants and decor. Once you're satisfied, you can fill the tank until the 1-inch mark from the rim.
Start your filter and check if the water is being dispersed quietly and smoothly. After 2 hours, make sure there aren't any leak and that the filter is still running well. When all is well, you may install the heater. Place it where the water comes out of the filter so that the heat is distributed evenly. Once the temperature is good, you may add your dechlorinator (if you used tap water) or other bacterial catalyst according to package instructions.
5. Cycle your tank for a few weeks
Cycling produces bacteria in the filter that would convert toxic chemicals into non-toxic nitrate. Follow the procedures for fishless cycling so you wouldn't have to harm any fish during your aquarium setup, and keep checking the water with your Master test kit until you've got the right chemical balance.
6. Introducing fish
Ask your trusted pet store for tips on selecting beginner fish types that go well together. Consider the adult sizes of the fish to make sure you won't have future problems with tank space. Start with just two or three and you can add more fish gradually after every 2 weeks. Once you bring your new fish home, follow the proper transfer procedure when placing them in the tank. Make sure the pet store water does not mix with your tank water.
To have the right aquarium setup, you need to be well-informed and patient throughout the process. It may be a bit tedious and time-consuming, but the rewards of having a healthy aquarium display for years to come will be worth it.
