Once your aquarium is complete with fish, equipment and accessories, you should now focus on aquarium maintenance, treatment and observation.
Daily
Feed your fish every day and observe their general behavior. It's better to do this during feeding time so that all the fish are visible. Any change as to how the fish behaves are indicators of health issues or problems with tank conditions. You may have to make certain adjustments. For example, if there's always some fish food leftover you will need to take the feed quantity down a notch and clean up the excess.
Look out for any aggressive or destructive behavior with your fish and address these issues quickly to avoid unnecessary harm or loss. Look closely into all corners of your tank and count your fish. If a small fish dies and goes unnoticed, its body could produce chemicals that will upset the balance of the entire habitat.
Check your equipment to see if they are running well. If the tank temperature seems to go up or down every day, there must be something wrong with your heater. Excess lighting can cause carbon dioxide levels to become too low, allowing harmful black beard algae to proliferate. Check that you only have medium lighting to make sure this doesn't happen. The sooner you notice these issues, the better chances of correcting any mishaps. Keep a journal or diary so you can jot down all notable details.
Weekly
Light cleaning once a week will ensure that your tank doesn't get too dirty. Wipe your tank's outer surfaces with aquarium-safe cleanser, scrape the inner walls to remove algae, and gently shake your plants to remove loose debris. Siphon the gravel or substrate to remove any dirt that has settled. Gently scrub any scum off of your aquatic plants with an aquarium-safe algae pad.
Some organisms like the black brush algae are harder to clean this way so you may have to use a 10% bleach solution for both artificial and live plants. A 5-minute soak should be sufficient to kill the algae without damaging the plants. If any of your live plants are delicate, soak them for less than 5 minutes instead. This loosens up the algae and makes it easier to scrub off.
Observe your plants closely every day and take action at the first sign of algae growth so you won't have to do the risky bleach cleaning.
Another weekly/bi-weekly task is the partial water change where you replace 25-30% of the aquarium water. Your replacement water should be treated and its temperature should match the remaining water in the tank. You can use an automatic water changer to make the process easier.
Monthly
Your monthly upkeep procedure is just like the weekly aquarium maintenance, but this time you must conduct a water test to check the levels of ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and pH. Do the water test first before going through the weekly/bi-weekly maintenance. Replace exhaustible components like activated carbon (if you have any) but retain a portion so that you can keep the good biological growth they contain. Check your equipment instructions to see if there's any monthly maintenance they require.
Keep a set of dedicated items for your tank upkeep like aquarium cleaners, brushes, algae scrubber, scissors for plant trimming, and water buckets. If you make sure you have a committed routine for aquarium maintenance, you won't have to worry about the overall health of your aquarium.
