Having aquatic pets is not just a matter of dropping fishes into a water bowl. There's so much information out there about caring for your aquariums that it's easy for a beginner to get lost in all of it. Take a look at the big picture before getting into specifics. These aquarium tips, guidelines and basic information will help you get started.
The bigger, the better
Getting a bigger tank is better for beginners (20 gallons or larger). It may seem overwhelming to take care of a big space when you don't have any experience, but it's actually the other way around. Having a bigger tank means you can maintain the balance of the aquarium more easily. Small tanks would accumulate waste faster and it's common for new fish keepers to overcrowd a small tank compared to a large one.
If you're concerned about the difficulty of changing the water, having a bigger tank means you won't have to do it very frequently. Yes, this means spending more upfront. But constant repairs and losing your beloved fish because of poor tank quality will cost you more in the long term. This is an investment you'd want to make.
Your first aquatic family
Start with fish and plant species that are hardy and inexpensive, preferably just two fishes at first. For a cold water aquarium, Swordtails or a White Cloud would be suitable. For heated freshwater, you can try a Black Molly or Betta. When learning about aquarium tips, remember to read more about the types of fish you've chosen. They might have some special maintenance needs or interesting characteristics you'd want to keep in mind, and some species are picky with what other species of fish they can or cannot tolerate in the same habitat.
Get a few live plants for your tank. Plants will generate oxygen while absorbing the carbon dioxide and ammonia wastes. They could also serve as shelter for your fishes. The best ones for beginners are green-colored, but once you get used to it you can start adding more colorful and high-maintenance plants along the way.
Carpet plants would spread out onto the base of your tank as they grow, like the Java Moss and Water Wisteria. For taller plants, you can try African Water Ferns or Amazon Sword. Just remember to look out for signs of aquarium plant deficiencies so you can treat them at once. You wouldn't want the harmful effects of plant nutrient deficiency upsetting the balance of your tank and harming your fish.
Basic equipment
Even though you're not building a complex tank just yet, there are must-have equipment that you can't go without. These are your filter, heater (and thermometer), air pump, lighting and gravel or substrate. The filter makes sure your aquarium water is clean and healthy while the heater and thermometer will help maintain the right temperature for your fish to survive.
The air pump adds oxygen while the lighting would provide a healthy cycle of light and dark. The gravel or substrate will provide the ideal habitat for healthy microorganisms to flourish, as well as the foundation for your aquatic plants.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many fish species, equipment brands, and substrate types out there. But with a general idea of what you need, choosing the best items for your aquarium will be easier. As long as you follow these basic aquarium tips, you'll have a satisfying experience as a fish keeper. You can easily bring the beauty of aquatic nature in your home.
