Aquarium plants are more than just an ornamental piece. They help provide the nutrients your fish needs in order to grow. They also offer a better environment for your pets. However, they may not be able to do their tasks when they are dealing with an aquarium plant nutrient deficiency.
The basic aquarium plant nutrients include magnesium, manganese, calcium, iron, potassium, phosphate, carbon dioxide, and nitrate. Deficiency in any of the said nutrients causes changes to the color, shape and/or structure of the plants leaves. If you want to know whether or not theres plant nutrient deficiency in your fish tank, pay attention to the leaves appearance. Below are the different aquarium plant deficiencies together with their possible causes and signs.
Magnesium Deficiency
With a recommended level of 5-10mg/l, magnesium is considered as a macronutrient for aquarium plants. Yellowish veins and leaves entail that your plants dont get much of the said element. Aside from the discoloration, this also leads to the stagnant growth of the plants.
Manganese Deficiency
Manganese deficiency is quite rare as it the element can be easily supplied. With the help of their leaves and roots, your plants can absorb this element from tap water and fertilizers. But if it happens that you find holes and yellow spots in your plants leaves, it is most likely caused by magnesium deficiency.
Calcium Deficiency
Just like manganese deficiency, calcium deficiency is not common a problem as well. Tap water can provide the needed calcium by your plants. Deficiency in the element happens when your plants have calcium below than the recommended level of 20-30mg/l. Distorted leaves are sign of this problem.
Iron Deficiency
Iron is considered as a microelement for aquarium plants as the plants will only need around 0.05-0.20mg/l. The fast growth of pale or yellowish leaves is a sign of iron deficiency in aquarium plants. The symptom is almost the same with that of magnesium deficiency; the only difference is that the leaves in magnesium-deficient are more pale or yellowish than those of their iron-deficient counterparts.
Potassium Deficiency
Potassium is another macronutrient as the aquarium plants need around 5-10mg/l. However, aquariums that are exposed to higher illumination may require more of the element as the plants tend to absorb the nutrient quickly. Brown dots and yellowish edges are symptoms of potassium deficiency.
Phosphate Deficiency
Your aquarium plants only require around 0.05-1.5mg/l of phosphate. Fish food and waste are the ultimate source of this compound. Too much of fish in your aquarium may result to excess supply of phosphate, which makes your aquarium an ideal habitat for algae. However, too few fish in your aquarium may result to this deficiency. When their leaves easily fall off, it means that your plants are getting low amounts of phosphate.
Carbon Dioxide Deficiency
With its recommended level of 20-25mg/l, you will already have an idea how vital carbon dioxide is to your aquarium plants. CO2 deficiency is evident when the leaves of your plants are twisted and/or have white deposits.
Nitrate Deficiency
When the level of nitrate in your aquarium goes down the recommended level of 5-25mg/l, you may encounter nitrogen deficiency in aquarium plants. Signs of this problem include young leaves with light green color and old leaves with yellowish color.
When you notice yellow aquarium plant leaves, you should conduct a test right away to find out the nutrient deficiency of your aquarium. You can buy a test kit to help you detect planted tank deficiency as well as the fertilizers that can help you supply the much-needed nutrients.
