I bet you're wondering what the correlation is between being an innovative farmer and your being able to get more clients, I would be if I was you. Actually, at first glance at the title, I'd wonder what YOU were thinking...
Let's just jump right in see exactly what the correlation is!
I'm not a farmer but I do know it's a 24/7 life, you really can't sit on your laurels waiting for things to happen.
Think about it .. a farmer can't wait until fall to harvest truckloads of delicious tomatoes, corn or squash, can he? A farmer, has to work hard all year long to prepare for that one or two weeks of reward!
In simple terms, here's some of what he has to do:
He has to prepare the ground following last year's harvest.
He has to plant seeds in the spring.
He has to water, fertilize and protect his fragile crops from pests, drought and poor weather.
And finally, after months of work, he enjoys the results.
Your business works the very same way .. Preparation, Planting, and Nurturing .. and if you follow the farmer's playbook, you'll soon see your rewards, too.
Let's get right to the dirt ( no pun intended ):
Preparing the Ground
This is where you take your brand, your voice, your very presence into your market (the soil). If you're just at the beginning stages—just like the farmer does after his harvest, preparing the ground—you'll be spending your time simply becoming known.
Now that you've defined your ideal client, it's time to hang out with other service providers in your niche. It's a great way to gather information, support and ideas. Join different groups where your ideal clients spend their time.
Get your website built, an optin completed and start your mailing list. This is your prep work that will build the foundation of a solid business (the preparation for your seeds to grow.)
Planting the Seeds
Your content and products are the seeds you're planting. Every time you write a blog post, create a new product, you're planting a seed that you will be able to harvest later. There is one difference between you and the farmer: the seeds the farmer plants can only produce once, yours will produce over and over again .. endlessly.
The wonderful thing is, you'll find that your blog posts from the past will continue to bring in new clients year after year, with no help on your part. The products you've created can be sold over and over again or repurposed into new offers. Podcasts, videos, your ebooks and all the other stuff you've created will continue to work for you, month after month, year after year.
When you step back and look at it that way, can you see what a critical part planting seeds plays in every business including yours?
"Every client you keep, is one less that you need to find." – Nigel Sanders
Nurturing Your Crop
It would be great if you could just plant the seeds and then forget it, don't you think? It rarely works that way in business.
Taking care of your business (your crop) must be done if you want it to continue to grow.
You need to:
Stay in touch with your email list
Update old blog posts with new ideas
Study your stats to improve your traffic and conversions
Improve your products
It's all about taking care of the little things. Without much effort, you can update your blog posts or tweak your products and reap the harvest. It's a quick and easy investment into your business.
It's not easy being a farmer, it's a long-term investment. It's the same for your business. All the work you do today, won't necessarily pay off for weeks or months to come.
But with dedication and consistent 'farming' in your business, you'll see your crops grow, expand and give you the long-term rewards you are looking for.
