I've brought this up off and on in the past. Living a life of authenticity is important.
It's simple. Life can be more beautiful than you ever imagined and there are many tools to get you to that beauty. Authenticity is one of them.
Authenticity in your relationships and in your daily life is one thing, but when it comes to your business, how does authenticity look? How open do you want to be in and about your business?
There are many entrepreneurs, such as Pat Flynn and Jon Lee Dumas, who are very transparent and show every detail of their journey. They will even include their monthly income statements! To some, this might be too much. But for many, it's an inspirational way to show that success can be theirs as well. It works! It attracts the exact audience they are after, which is after all what marketing is all about!
Authenticity, or transparency can come in many forms. Addiction, divorce, loss, mental illness... Some or all of these things are very often shared when promoting some businesses.
It's your decision!
"Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway." – Mother Teresa
You decide what or how much you want to let people into your personal/financial/emotional life. You certainly don't have to be completely open about everything. It takes a little planning.
Let's look at your Social Media Profiles.
This is where a lot of businesses trip and fall, especially with the granddaddy of them all, Facebook.
You have your personal profile, which is where you hang with your family and friends, let your hair down and share personal information. Remember that post you did on how sick you were with the flu?
Then there is your business page, where you talk, you know, BUSINESS.
What happens over time is many of your business contacts migrate to your personal page. It's hard to avoid. Pretty soon they are hearing all about that bout of flu or how Johnny was acting last night. Think about it, before you know it, these professional contacts and potential clients are seeing the cat video you shared, the selfie you posted.
It all could be filed under 'TMI' or Too Much Information!
Social Media is fun. It's exciting and is an excellent way to get yourself known, especially if you are growing your business.
But and there is a BUT .. you need to pay attention to not only what you are saying but who you are saying it too!
Take a moment to learn about the different privacy settings, adjust them so you've got all the needed privacy settings in place and consider limiting who you "FRIEND." That helps to create a boundary line while still maintain your business offerings.
Remember, the Internet is Forever.
Here's the scary fact: What you post lives forever! I know, it never use to be that way .. but it is now! Unfortunately, you need to remember that anything you post, each blog or tweet etc will last forever.
Look at it this way – if you don't want prying eyes knowing your business, the simple answer is don't post at all. Visualize a billboard along the highway, can you see one? Now look at your blog posts, Tweets, Facebook status updates and Instagram and put them on that billboard!
OUCH! If you don't want everyone who drives past to read them, don't put them online either!
Leaks will happen, in fact the odds are great even though you try so hard to keep things secure. Once they are out there in the zone, you will never get them back.
Have you heard the saying 'Think before you speak?' Now change it to 'Think before you post.' You never know who might be reading nor do you know how they might affect your brand image. So no nasty replies, intimate details and other confidential 'stuff'.
So, the best way to keep separate personal and professional lives is to not post anything iffy. If you don't want it on a billboard for all to see, then don't post it online. So consider what you post. You never know who's looking.
Plain and simple.
Be aware of who you are and who your audience is. If there are things in your life, you care not to share .. DON'T!
While transparency is and can be a way to drive business, it's ABSOLUTELY fine to maintain privacy.
The COOL thing is, YOU'RE in charge so you can decide what and how much to share.
"Speak the truth. Transparency breeds legitimacy." – John C. Maxwell
