A mindful culture emerges as a 'passive' response to the current consumer toxic culture. In the consumer suicide culture objects are loved and people used. This results in us dehumanizing each other farther than our eyes can even see. We do not value the hearts around us and forget what matters, healthy relationships with people and nature. Way too many times when we open our eyes we've done irreversible damage with our thoughts, words, habits and actions. But we don't need to give up our rehabilitation and healing process to get to be the best version of ourselves, the way we were always meant to be.
Now, to be the best version of ourselves requires intentional attentiveness to detect toxins in our thoughts, relationships and habits. Only then will we be able to devise a rescue plan to claim back all those aspects of our being to repair. That is why I call this page Mindful Culture, because we need to slow down in our endeavors to be truly present and pay attention to what is happening when we put that toiletry in the shopping cart, when we see a beautiful smile on the billboard, what do I feel? why do I want that and how do I really get it? is it really by buying that make up?
In this page I will concentrate on providing tools and alternatives to detect and repair physical toxins in our daily use products and foods. I might share some of my experience managing poisonous thoughts, but I am not a counselor so they would be few.
Why do we need to pay attention to the toxins surrounding our lives? Because sadly we buy them and even worse, we desperately demand them. When we buy and consume without paying attention to the ingredient list on the label, we grant permission to toxic substances to invade our bodies. What affects our bodies inevitably affects our emotions, heart, mind and spirit.
The problem is that conventional media (and the corporations that manage them) make us think there is no other way to live, that to look decently put together and be accepted we need to look this or that way, use this or that apparatus... And in top of that, we don't have time and energy to look over every single label under the sun. So first we need to learn to simplify our existence. The minimalism ideal seems attractive to start with something. The first and best way to protest against the toxic consumerism culture is by not buying what you don't need. Punto.
The second way to protest is to stay aware and up to date with the production processes. You don't need to be a process engineer but at least get updated with unwanted ingredients*. Some specific things to look for in labels as a red flag are propyl-paraben, PEG, retinol or retinyl, formaldehyde, phthalates (usually disguised as 'Fragrance' or 'Parfum'), BPA, Fluoride and the list will keep growing. You need to avoid those ingredients at all costs for your wellbeing and that of the communities and workers near those products. The safest way of following the label is making the product yourself or trade with people you trust.
And the third way to obtain health promoting, eco- and socially-conscious products is finding a trustworthy source. For that my friend you would have to do some research yourself. For food you can follow the USDA Organic label and also EWG's Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen. But for personal care products labels are confusing. To save you some time and effort I'm going to give you a good company I have thoroughly researched to start with: Miessence. All their products are certified organic and also fair trade where needed. Check it out and come back to me if you want to talk more about it.
*I personally believe that technology advances have made a great good but also great damage. I am not totally against synthetic surfactants, but the problem is we are the guinea pigs for these experiments without confirming their toxic effects beforehand. This is why I prefer to protest by boycotting any type of synthetic ingredient until the FDA inspects and limits them properly.
Keep growing in health
