Various organizations across the world like the World Health Organization are advocates of promoting women and children's rights. Women deal with numerous health conditions and world leaders and organizations are working hard in addressing them. In any part of the world, there are women's issues that need to be sorted out right away.
Here are the top 5 main women's issues that everyone should be aware of in order to promote education, prevention, and possible cure.
1. Cancer – Breast and cervical cancer are two of the most common cancers affecting women. Cervical cancer kills around half a million women per annum while breast cancer kills around another half a million annually. Majority of these deaths happen to low and middle-income countries where prevention, screening, and treatment are almost scarce. Vaccination against human papilloma virus is much needed as well as promotion of early detection as a way to keep women healthy and alive.
Reproductive Health - One third of health issues for women between 15 and 44 years old are caused by sexual and reproductive health. The major factor is unsafe sex in women in developing countries. Contraception and proper education is important for the 222 million women all over the world who are not getting the said health services.
2. Maternal Health – Almost 300,000 women died from complications in pregnancy and child birth in 2013. This is because pre-natal and post-natal care are not readily available in a lot of countries in the world. Most of the deaths related to pregnancy and child birth could have been prevented if every woman in the world had an easy access to family planning and basic health services.
3. HIV – In the three decades into the AIDS epidemic, women are still vulnerable and struggling to be protected against sexual transmission of HIV. They are also having trouble in getting the required treatment once the virus has been acquired. This leaves women vulnerable to complications brought by HIV such as tuberculosis. This is the leading cause of death among women between the age of 20 to 59 in low-income countries.
4. STI or Sexually Transmitted Infections - HIV and human papillomavirus infection are the world's most common STI. Still, it is important to prevent other sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. More than 200,000 stillbirths and early fetal deaths and over 90,000 newborn deaths are caused by untreated syphilis alone.
The world has made a lot of progress in applying knowledge when it comes to women's issues. This provides young girls a good start in life. There has also been a high political will in ensuring that services for sexual and reproductive health will increase in some countries. The most important factors in influencing women's health which are—education for women and political participation for women—have increased in many countries all over the world.
Though women's health has been a priority in most developing countries, there are still areas wherein women are still not getting the chance to be well educated, obtain health services when needed, and given equal opportunity to work for themselves. That is the reason why the World Health Organization is working very hard to implement health systems. They are also making sure that these projects will be well financed and health workers are well trained and committed.
