About Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are replications of a in-born tooth enamel that are made in order to restore the functions of the teeth due to reasons such as a missing tooth, or to simply just provide an better appearance to the person who is going to wear it.
Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations used when old layers are removed or are needed to be replaced.
Inlays are used in the points of a tooth while onlays or partial crowns are used within the grooves and over the cusps.
Types
There are three types of crowns that are used depending on the needs and preferences of the patients.
Full metal crowns
Full metal crowns are known for their durability . However, they do not look anything close to a natural tooth because of how they are made out of gold, palladium, or platinum thus, instead of being used in locations where it can be easily noticed; full metal crowns are usually used for molars.
Semi-porcelain metal crowns
Semi-porcelain metal crowns are made out of porcelain being fused to metal. These crowns look closer to a natural tooth compared to full metal crowns because of how the metal is hidden under a ceramic coating. However, this type of dental crown has a major downside. Semi-porcelain metal crowns can cause injury to happen on opposing teeth compared to full metal and porcelain crowns.
Porcelain crowns
Porcelain crowns are the closest image of a natural tooth. Aside from its appearance , these crowns can also replicate the function of an original tooth but, compared to the original, porcelain lacks an amount of resilience . Nevertheless, it is considered as the best option among the three types.
Porcelain crowns have its variations which are the CEREC crowns, Empress crowns, and Zirconia crowns.
CEREC Crowns
CEREX Crowns are entirely made out of ceramic stronger than porcelain. Although these may be stronger than porcelain, they are recommended to be used for the back teeth due to some esthetic limitations it has.
Empress crowns
Empress crowns uses materials such as empress pressed ceramic material, Procera, In-Ceram, zirconia, and feldspathic porcelain.
E.max crowns
E.max crowns are stronger compared to empress crowns and are made out of a ceramic called lithium disilicate.
Zirconia crowns
Zirconia crowns are made out of zirconia or often called as ceramic steel. Due to the nature of zirconia, these crowns are so strong that they can even be used in a bridge.
Maintenance
Just like natural teeth, dental crowns should be treated and maintained well thus, they also require regular brushing with non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and flossing.
A follow-up appointment will be scheduled by the dentist shortly after you have gotten your crowns. This is done in order for him to review his work and see if whether or not there will be any complications such as allergic reactions, chipped and loose teeth or any discomfort.
