Have you ever sat down and answered this question: What does overwhelm feel like? I have. I'd describe it like this – I'm out swimming and suddenly I can barely keep my head above water. In fact, it actually feels like I'm drowning.
Does that resonate with you? Is that how you would describe it?
You work so hard; you try to wear so many hats... Reality sinks in ..
You can only stack so many hats on your head before they all topple to the floor.
Then what? You've got dirty hats. Nobody likes dirty hats.
When you try to do it all, you're really not giving things the attention they deserve. Your work (be it in business or tending to your family etc) suffers. You may take shortcuts or drop a hat or two.
Secretly you think: Wouldn't it be nice to concentrate on one thing at a time?
So, is there a cure for the infamous overwhelm?
There's no magic pill you can take, not a cure per se, but I do have some tips for you.
You can't calm the storm, so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself. The storm will pass." – Timber Hawkeye
First of all – BREATHE. Overwhelm is a nasty, sneaky creature; one that thrives on your elevated stress level.
Take a deep breath, in through the nose, out through the mouth... that's it, breathe in and whoosh, let it out.. You've got this.
In fact, tell yourself you've got this.
Breathe in the calm confidence that you need to work through the tangled mess of "so much to do!"
Breathe out the frazzled, frantic, confusing energies that DO NOT serve you.
Second – Cut yourself some slack! You are not a superhero (sorry to say) and you do not need to try and put on a cape to pretend to be one.
There is NO REASON to get yourself all in a tizzy.
Ask for help. Admit to yourself and others that no, you cannot do it all.
Be realistic about what you can and can't get done and when.
We've talked about setting attainable goals... well, set attainable goals to help you conquer your to-do-list.
Here's my super sized special secret – In any situation, setting ourselves up for success is a show of self-love. Take care of you. Take care of you the way you take care of everyone and everything else, by NOT taking care of EVERYONE and EVERYTHING.
As hard as it can be to imagine sometimes, especially when you're right in the middle of a jam-pack, does-it-never-end day .. It really is ok to let yourself go at a better, more manageable pace.
You know how much I hate "The glorification of busy".
Third – Put things in perspective.
In reality, some of your tasks may be best delegated to someone else.
Some might be ok if you put them aside for a short time.
Some you may be able to drop without an issue.
Take a look at the pieces that make up your overwhelming situation, lay it all out... Write it down.
Ask yourself these questions:
Can you look at your tasks; all laid out, and prioritize?
Can you look at how long each task takes and how they may or may not fit together?
Are there things you can set and forget while you concentrate on the things that really need your immediate attention? Is it possible that your laundry can run, unattended, while dinner is being prepped- for example?
I like to call that passive multitasking. (I don't recommend to actively multitask, due to the threat of overwhelm and the possibility of forgetting things or messing them up due to juggling all those hats.)
Once you spread it out in front of you, you may be surprised to find simple solutions that you wouldn't have thought of in that state of overwhelm. Do keep in mind; that you can and should ask for help if you need it.
At the end of the day, most of us want to feel like we've accomplished something.
We want to know that we are that much closer to our goals. A life without ambition and dreams is like a merry-go-round. You may get a cool unicorn to ride, and it feels like a such a great smooth ride. You go up... you go down... you go up... you go down... and this pattern continues.
Around and around and around, up and down. Getting nowhere, fast, with all of the other passengers around you.
The ride is nice, but nothing is seems to be happening, just up and down, around and around.
You're maintaining this perpetually orbiting spot you occupy, that's the nature of your life.
But where is the fun? The adventure? The passion?
It's time to get off of that merry-go-round and make your own path... a life of your very own design. Overwhelm will kick in sometimes. It's almost inevitable.
But ... if you can stop, breathe, cut yourself some slack and sort out what the priorities are, what can be dropped or saved for later, what you can assign to someone else, what can you passively multitask, you just might find the perfect going forward life ride!
It's part of taking care of you. Don't let yourself step into that overwhelmed state. Don't own and identify with being harried all the time. You deserve better; you deserve peace.
You're not your to-do-list. You are the one ... THE ONLY ONE ... to set yourself up for the success ... of you.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes, several attack me all at once. – Ashleigh Brilliant
