With the onset of online jobs, the number of available home-based online jobs soared. Criminals have also found ways to swindle potential job seekers.
You can find a thousand and one ways to make money online; unfortunately not all are legitimate.
Here some of the most sophisticated ways that scammers use to swindle job seekers:
Fake URLs. Most scammers use fake URLs of big and well-known companies to attract potential clients. To mislead users, they would usually use the original URL and add a word within the original URL making users to believe that it is the real one.
Let us say for example HYPERLINK "http://www.company.com" http://www.company.com is the original URL, a scammer will use the same URL HYPERLINK "http://www.company.inc.com" http://www.company.inc.com. Notice the word inc added to the URL. The scammer will use the faade and logo of the company using the fake URL leading the user to think that it is real and not fake.
Job offers from reputable job hiring sites. The scammer would create an employer account on job hiring sites and send out emails to users. They would often make the package too good to refuse to unsuspecting users. Once they have you in their pool, they would use your skills and then without notice disappears and you would be left without work and unpaid.
Getting and using your bank or credit card information. Most of the time, you receive emails or read about how to earn extra money at home kits. Be wary of those offers. The scam is to make you pay the kit so they could get your bank or credit card information. The deal would be true enough but what they do not tell you is along with the kit, you would be charge with an additional monthly amount that you did not approve.
Use of Instant Messenger to conduct interviews. No legitimate company offering online work would conduct an interview using IM. Legitimate interviews are done via a phone call, a video call or both. Employers would normally want to see or hear the voice of their potential employees.
Information on the company is unverified. If you cannot verify the legitimacy of the company, chances are this is a scam no matter how legitimate the work offer feels.
Protecting yourself
With the numerous numbers of online scams today, avoiding them is not easy. There are ways to protect yourself.
Conduct a research. Do not take the company information at face value . No matter how legitimate it sounds, checking out the company is one of the best ways to avoid online job scams.
If you have an offer from a recruiter for a potential online job, ask for the name of the company who wishes to hire you. It will not hurt to check the legitimacy of the person recruiting you and the job offer presented to you. If the recruiter refuses to disclose the name, chances are this is a scam.
Be aware of the signs. Look out for signs that smells like a scam to you. The signs to look out for:
The pay is too high for a small work. Example of a fake advert, Make money working from home, we pay $200 per hour for a typing job. That sounds too good to be true.
Watch out for incorrect grammars and spelling errors on job postings. If it is too obvious, chances of scam is possible.
The recruiter is asking for your personal information such as bank or credit card information.
The email address is a personal email or one that is similar to a legitimate company.
You get hired without being asked for references or without verifying your experiences.
Scammers will probably never go away but knowing how to protect yourself will keep you from being an easy prey. Ask for tips from people who are already working from a home environment or you can read blogs, articles, or books. A good resource book is Make Money from Home Available in Amazon.
