Many people can vouch for the fact that before a few years ago, the MMA was a completely male-dominated sport. Despite the presence of promotions that sign women fighters, such as Strikeforce, EliteXC, Valkyrie, Smackgirl and DEEP Jewels (some of which are now non-existent), it seems as though the UFC, the most prominent l known promotion in the MMA scene, will still not be allowing MMA female fighters to fight for them.
UFC president Dana White mentioned that, Women wont ever fight in the UFC. All of these changed when Ronda Rousey entered the picture. The first ever UFC fight that involved MMA female fighters took place on February 23, 2013 with Rousey and Carmouche featured in the main event. As the fight l match was about to begin, the announcer, Joe Rogan, said, This is a gigantic cultural moment, and it was because there were over a thousand people in attendance l present to witness l see a UFC event with MMA female fighters.
Ronda Rousey started off as an athlete in Judo and even made it to the Beijing Olympics. After her return to the US, Rousey that there was not much opportunity present for women who like beating people up for sport and because of this, she opted l chose to work as a waitress and bartender. After some time, Rousey decided to start training for Mixed Martial Arts and without surprise, started fighting with other athletes and, well, winning against them. She was able to win her first three matches in the first round by arm bar. After that, she signed up with a different promotion and started winning her games in the first round by arm bar as well. It seems as though this particular l specific recipe of hers is turning out to be her signature move.
Ronda also won her first ever professional fight against Ediane Gomes in the first round using arm bar. This pattern started to attract the attention of millions of MMA fighters and fans across the and eventually, on November of 2012, she was signed to the UFC. Rouseys fight against Carmouch was able to open new doors of opportunity to the many female MMA fighters from across the world. Its clear that women entering the octagon were a huge risk Dana white willed himself to take. But if this first fight was anything to go by, it is clear that these female fighters are here to stay.
Although the number of MMA female fighters does not compare to that of men, there are still a number of them who were able to shine and standout from others. Before Ronda Rousey entered the scene, MMA was mostly a sport where all you can see inside the ring are males. Thanks to her undying efforts and hard work, Rousey was able to introduce to the world the real potential and skill of MMA female fighters. She was able to start a new era where women are also given the chance to show to the world the extent of their strength and power.
