The Bargain...
When you're over 35 and a mother of 5, the last thing that you're usually going to be thinking about is having another baby. Unless you're me.
My second husband has one child of his own and one that we are raising as ours. After over two years together and much begging on his part, I decided to tempt Fate by being fair. Dustin wanted to have one biological child with me. I recall saying, many times, "Honey, I just can't. I'm too old. The pregnancies are very difficult on me." In the end, though, I caved. It meant so much to him.
My first three children are girls and they are much older. Raven will be 16, Tara will be 14, and Willow, who will be 9. After the 3 girls, we have Gabriel who will be turning 6 and Gideon who is a little over 18 months old.
Now, I'm betting that you're sitting back saying, "Good God, woman! Would you dare?"
Apparently so.
After 5 children I'm fairly accurate at knowing when I'm fertile and when I'm not. So, when Dustin came home one evening, I made a deal with him. I would give him, starting right then, two days to get me pregnant. If, after those two fertile days, I was not pregnant, I was going to make the appointment to get my tubes tied.
We both have children. We have jobs. We only "tried" a few times...
4 Weeks Later...
I sat in Grandma's bathroom holding the unused early pregnancy test. 3 to 4 minutes for the results to show up. I knew the drill.
Now, ladies, if you've ever taken a pregnancy test, you know that there really isn't a graceful way to pee on a little stick. Whoever designed those things is either twisted or has one hell of a sense of humor.
On with the show.
After drinking about a gallon of water, I sat in Grandma's bathroom ready to see if my emotional mood swings meant that I was pregnant or if I was just hitting menopause early.
There was no waiting. As soon as the fluid hit the pregnancy test there were double pink lines and I simply sat there staring at it. I recall that my very first thought was, "It had better be a girl."
I was pregnant. Again.
Dustin was going to be a daddy. I, suddenly, couldn't wait to tell him. For the moment, thoughts of how hard the pregnancy was going to be were replaced by ideas on how to reveal this news to him. I could wait and plan out something elaborate, but no. I couldn't wait. It had to be right then. It was around 10 at night and decided to drive to where Dustin was working to tell him. Leaving Gideon with Grandma, I left and headed to the grocery store first. Because I was impatient and "on the fly", I swooped through the isles grabbing this and that. One little blue gift bag, a two pack of pacifiers, a onesie (pink and white), a small gift card, and a mouth guard. (I'll explain the mouth guard in a moment.)
Into the bag went these little items and with the pregnancy test in my coat pocket, I was off again.
When I reached Dustin's place of work, I sat in the driveway and texted him to come outside. He came to the car and got in when I asked him to. I handed him the blue bag.
The first thing that he took out of the bag was the pacifiers. Next came the onesie. At that point, he looked over at me and his face was a mixture of hope and confusion.
Out came the mouth guard and he smiled.
Then, he opened the tiny card.
He looked up at me and his eyes started to fill. "Seriously? You're not messing with me right now?"
I reached into my pocket and took out the pregnancy test, handing it to him. He stared at it...and then stared at it some more.
When he finally looked up at me again he had tears in his eyes and he was grinning.
One hour later, there was a post on Facebook with a picture of the items as well as the test itself. Mixed in with the congratulations were questions about the mouth guard...
Visions of OBGYN Doctors Danced In My Head...
Right now, I'm not sick and feel great. I'm a little moody from time to time, but otherwise, all is well. I keep thinking about how, very soon, I'll be seeing the doctor again and the tests and shots and blood work will soon follow. It will all be worth it. The look on his face told me so. Tomorrow I get to call my doctor.
The Mouth Guard...
On occasion, Dustin would ask me the questions, "What would you do if you got pregnant again?" or "How hard would you smack me if you found out you were pregnant?". He always asked these questions in a playful tone and my response would be mock severe and blunt.
I knew that there was always a reason that he would ask me random questions about becoming pregnant. He wanted us to have a baby together.
I would always raise an eyebrow and tell him that I'd have to punch him. That if I ever became pregnant again he'd have to buy a mouth guard because I was not the sweetest pregnant woman. Moody doesn't even begin to cover it. Lol He's fully aware of this.
Of course, I was teasing about punching him. The mouth guard was our little inside pregnancy joke.
