This above all: to thine own self be true – William Shakespeare
So, be authentic... right? I know exactly what you are thinking.
You've heard it before. Be authentic. In fact, many times!
You tried it yourself .. to live with authenticity.
Each time you had a bumpy start. At one point you were still figuring out who you are, the whole concept became totally confusing and frustrating. Often times those feelings felt disruptive and took you further off your path.
Maybe we do try to get a little TOO authentic too fast... telling people what we really think, no matter the result? Or pigging out on junk foods because "my body must need something in this ice cream... I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner!". So, what does this actually mean?
Let's break it down ...
An authentic life is one in which you get to be you, ALL THE TIME.
Which means asking yourself who are now, who you THINK you are as well as who you KNOW yourself to be when you're very honest with yourself...
Who do you want to be and how will you get there?
Authenticity is so important in every aspect of life., but for the sake of time and simplicity let's focus on the little things. Think about any little preferences you may have. Your "things." We all have "things."
Honoring those little things adds up to something much bigger. Self-love. Which is a huge part of authenticity. We've talked about self-love about a million times, but this is a little different.
By honoring the small things for ourselves, we're being authentic... committed to our own well being and happiness. Now, I'm not saying step on others' toes because you prefer to do something a different way.
"The more of me I be, the clearer I can see." ― Rachel Archelaus
For example...
A good friend of mine has a "thing" about making her bed. Her bed is always made, no matter the signs of family life everywhere else. I've asked her why her bed is always so perfect while there are other things that could need tending to. Things that seemed to be more important (to me) than one bed in the house being made. She says it helps her see and feel that calm is attainable. Even while the kids may be running around crazy, dinner burning, laundry everywhere...
But look! The bed is so pretty and peaceful and quiet... there IS calm in this world still!
It may seem silly, but my friend honors her need to be reminded of the calm that sandwiches the storms in life. It's a small thing that has meaning to her and doesn't affect anyone else. She will push any discarded pajamas or lingering pets off and make that bed... faithfully. Every morning.
She takes the time to do it because she knows that later in the day, when things get a little nuts, she still has that bed all made and waiting for her. She can take a nanosecond to peek in her bedroom and see the smooth duvet and the pillows piled up just so.
Once or twice, I've seen her bed unmade. I didn't think much of it but then I realized that on those days she wasn't quite herself. Not due to the unmade bed... the unmade bed was a manifestation of her being out of sorts.
What does that tell you?
It tells me that when my friend is in a good place, she takes the time to give herself that small comfort to help her STAY in that good place. When she's depressed or overwhelmed, sometimes she won't honor that little need and then in the middle of the day, she won't have that pretty bed to peek at. Then each time she goes in and out of that room, what she sees is the chaos. It's the same bed that is so lovely and a stable source of calm when it's made... but it's a mess. Which helps to keep her out of that good place she's generally in.
So, think about some of your "things." Maybe you can get some insight that will help you on your journey. Take some time to observe and feel your patterns and habits for what they are. Maybe you can drop some stressors and honor the fact that you're YOU.
After all ... To thine own self be true.
