Pride, honor, and courage- these may be one of the things that one thinks of when the topic is about serving in the military. It�s a job that only the brave ones can do. Being a military veteran may give a person pride for serving his country but it has its own downsides, too. In the case of Mark Humes, retiring from the military placed a limitation on the possible things that he can still accomplish. The list of possible job opportunities became a short one. Fortunately, this did not stop him from accomplishing his dream of becoming an artist.
Humes suffered from mental and physical injuries when he was still serving as a solider in the U.S. Army. With such a record, he was informed that this may hinder him from getting a couple jobs after his retirement from the military. Nonetheless, it seemed that it was not Humes who had a limited choice of jobs to do. It turned out that it was the people who gave him the news who had a limited list of jobs in mind. It was not his illnesses that limited him but the mindset of the people around him. They may not even have thought of the endless possibilities that an injured military veteran can do.
Music became Humes� weapon in fighting the rash reality of being an injured soldier. The once fallen military officer became an artist who speaks to the people through the songs he created. He was once an on-air personality DJ under the pseudonym DJ Guilewolf.
It was in 2005 when he founded a radio station called Paladin Radio Wpal-DB. It is a live-streamed radio station with a very unique purpose. Mark Humes worked with the Centre for Military Music Opportunity (CAMMO) and Mission One Voice to give military artists the chance to share their own music. He wanted to give the opportunity to his fellow artists who may have been experiencing the things that he once suffered from. Aside from being a form of entertainment, Paladin Radio became a source of music that inspires and heals people. Because of this, Humes described this radio station as a soldier of light.
The efforts of Humes was given recognition during the At The Rain Awards when Paladin Radio became a semi-finalist for "Best Single Stream Webcaster" category in 2013. The radio station was considered as one of the best pureplay webcasters. Its stream of radio contents from the station�s different participants caught the attention of various radio station in the internet.
What makes this nomination a huge honor is the fact that most of the nominees are backed by prominent corporations. Paladin Radio Wpal-DB is a privately-owned radio that is independently managed. For it to compete with huge internet radio station is indeed something that can be considered a big accomplishment.
Paladin Radio became Mark Humes� stepping stone to prove how much potential a person can have even if the people around sees him as someone who is injured.
