In mixedmartialarts, arm and shoulder locks are not as exhilarating and fancy to look at compared to the good old-fashioned striking and other kinds of submission techniques. However, it does not mean that it is not as effective and as risky when executed properly inside the ring. For this reason, it is best to be knowledgeable on the top arm and shoulder locks in MMA.
Arm Bar
Perhaps the most common of all the arm locks in MMA, the arm bar is intended to give pain to the opponent by hyperextending his arm. This technique is done by trapping and isolating the opponents arm between the attackers legs. After that, the arm is pulled, and the attacker leans backward and arches his hips. Through this, pressure buildup will be focused on the opponents elbow, causing excruciating pain. When done overly or for prolonged period, the arm bar could cause the defenders elbow ligament to be damaged, or worse, the arm or elbow joint to break.
Americana lock
When studying mixedmartialarts, probably one of the first locks one would encounter is the Americana lock. To perform this, the attacker uses his hand to pin the enemys arm to the ground. This motion would cause the opponents elbow to fall at a 90-degree angle, with his palm facing upward. Then, the attacker slides his other hand under the opponents biceps, and swiftly grasps his own wrist to lock. Doing this creates a figure 4, which is why this technique is also sometimes called figure 4 lock. To create pressure to the shoulder, elbow, and wrist, the attacker needs to hyperextend the opponents arm. This is done by pulling the opponents wrist towards his body. At the same time, the forearm and elbow is slightly elevated, resulting to dislocation and flexion to the enemys joint.
Kimura
This submission technique is best applied either when the fighter is in guard or side position. To start, the attacker grabs the enemys wrist or hand, and subsequently opens his own guard to be able to rotate to the side or sit up. Then he will reach over the enemys arm that is being held, and successively grab his own wrist. The prone opponents arm is then pushed as far away from the body towards his head. With this, the shoulder hyper rotates and pain is induced.
Omoplata
This move is a continuation of the Kimura. It is also one of the most complex submission techniques in MMA, so doing it correctly would be a challenge. However, when done properly, it could cause serious elbow or shoulder injuries to the defender.
When the opponent is in a Kimura lock position, the fighter lifts his leg over the enemys shoulder and subsequently pushes below the chin. After that, the attacker sits up and leans forward to hyper rotate the defenders arm.
In mixedmartialarts, knowing the different arm and shoulder submission techniques is not only important for offense; in fact, knowing these would greatly help in anticipating and defending against the enemys arm and shoulder lock attempts. So by learning these different techniques, one could be a well-rounded fighter.
