Mixed martial arts, or simply MMA, is regarded today as the most complicated and most realistic martial arts application for a number of reasons. And of these several reasons, probably the most important is the fact that in MMA fighting, a fighter is not restricted to just one martial arts discipline; he is free to use and apply almost any method he could master. Because of this, various techniques, especially when talking about submissions, have gained popularity and acceptance from fighters and fans alike.
In this article, the most common lower body submission techniques that have had the opportunity to gain maximum exposure in the fighting ring will be discussed.
Knee Bar
In MMA fighting, one of the most basic submission techniques is called the knee bar. This move usually commences after a fighter comes out of the other opponents guard. While on top, the fighter will turn his back on the opponent, which is currently in prone position. Subsequentyl, the fighter would enclose his arms and legs around one leg of the opponent. To be effective, the fighter doing the knee bar must hyperextend the opponents knee by way of using his own body weight as the primary force. This is usually done by falling backwards as much as he can, or even pulling down the opponents toes to add torque and power to the submission.
Ankle Lock
Ankle lock is performed when the opponent is lying down. The fighter wraps his arm around the opponents ankle then slides it beneath his armpits. Locking of the ankle is achieved by securing the fighters locking arm to his opposite arm. The free hand is then positioned on the opponents shin and is used as leverage in combination with the fighters leg. Pressure can be induced to the opponent by leaning back. This move causes the enemys calf and Achilles tendon to hyperextend, bringing pain to the other fighter.
Calf Slicer
The calf slicer, also called leg slicer or thigh crusher, is a move that utilizes compression by pressing the opponents calf muscle directly to the attackers own wrist or shin. Initially, the calf slicer is done by the fighter inserting his leg or arm into the rear side of the opponents knee. Then, using free hand of the fighter, the opponents foot is grabbed and pulled. Pressure is induced by the flexion of the opponents leg against the shin bone or wrist of the fighter. This move directs pain to the calf muscle of the opponent while the attacker maintaining control over the defenders movements. Aside from bringing excruciating pain to the opponents leg, the calf slicer can also cause separation of the joints and tearing of the ligaments of the knee and foot if applied strongly for a prolonged period of time.
In MMA fighting, the sky is the limit when it comes to submitting an opponent. The leg locks mentioned above are just examples of the most basic techniques that are useful for novice or seasoned fighters inside the octagon.
