One of the most-feared techniques in MMA is submission by way of choking. Its main goal is to compress the opponents neck to cause difficulty in breathing and blockage of blood flow to the brain.
An MMA fighter, whether a beginner or a veteran, should always mind choke holds as they can cause a big advantage in a fight. In this article, the most common choke submissions and how they are performed will be discussed.
Guillotine Choke
This technique is almost universal in all grappling martial arts. This is usually performed when a fighter is on his back and the opponent on top of him. The fighter, lying down, wraps his arms around the enemys trachea and successively clasps both his hands. The fighter could control the opponents resistance by using his hips and legs to wrap around the other fighters body. To be more effective, the fighter must apply upward pressure on the opponents neck. The head can also be pulled down to reinforce the upward pushing force to the neck.
Rear Naked choke
An MMA fighter, when performing rear naked choke, comes up from behind his enemy. He then encircles one of his arms around the opponents neck, with the crook of his elbow at level with the opponents trachea. The attackers hand from the encircling arm is then clasped onto his biceps to keep the choke in place. The other, free hand can either be placed at the back of the opponents head or the shoulder to further secure the choke. Finally, both of the attackers elbows are brought together to exert pressure on the lateral sides of the opponents neck.
Arm Triangle Choke
The arm triangle choke, also called the side choke or head arm choke, is probably the most used choke technique in MMA. This technique, although it can be performed while in mounting or half-guard position, is most effective when the attacker is positioned at the side of the opponent. With palms down, the attacker slides his hand and then arm under the opponents blocking arm and head. As the enemy drives his arm into the attackers neck, the attacker responds by pushing his arm through the elbow, followed by dropping of the head. This is to trap the enemys arm against his neck. When executed correctly, the attackers arm would exert pressure to one side of the opponents neck, and his head would force the defenders arm, or shoulder to press against the other side of his neck, blocking blood flow.
Triangle Choke
The triangle choke is like the arm triangle choke, but instead of using the attackers arms, it makes use of his legs. As the opponent is attempting to pass a fighters guard, his arm is grabbed and pulled. Meanwhile, the fighter performing the triangle choke wraps his legs around the opponents body and keeps his foot under the defenders knee on the opposite leg to lock. The knee is then bent and hands placed at the back of the head. With enough power, pressure to the lateral neck arteries of the opponent can be applied.
For an MMA fighter, choke submissions could mean the difference between a win and a loss. However, it should always be noted that these moves must be performed responsibly as they could cause harm, or even death to the opponent.
