To capture stress in one definition is not an easy task. Stress is a subjective phenomenon which makes defining it difficult. What is common in the definitions found is that stress is a state of mind, a mental or emotional strain where one does not feel in control of a situation. This lack of control of a situation is what causes the stress in most people.
Taking control of a situation is the primary concern of stress management. Managing stress is about gaining control of every aspect of your day-to-day life: your emotions, thoughts, environment, schedule, time, and taking control of how you address your problems. The goal of stress management is to achieve an equilibrium in your life where you can balance your time for work, interpersonal relationships, fun, relaxation, including the day-to-day challenges that come your way.
Effective Strategies for Stress Management
There are many ways through which people cope with stress. Coping responses to stress may either be unhealthy or healthy responses. Check and evaluate your coping mechanisms. If how you cope with stress does not contribute to your physical and emotional well-being, you might want to consider changing to healthier options. When dealing with a stressful event, you can choose to change the situation or change the reaction.
Changing the Situation. You can change the stressful situation by:
Avoiding unnecessary stress.
Saying �no� � establish your limits and stay within that limit. Refuse additional responsibilities in your personal and professional life. Go beyond the limit and you are stepping over and exposing yourself to stressors.
Stay away from people who are sources of stress � There are people who seem to be in the habit of causing stress. You can limit the time you spend with these type of people or you can cut the relationship.
Control your environment � An example of how to control your environment: if you happen to watch a particular TV program which annoys you, turn off the TV or leave the room.
Avoid sensitive topics � if discussing differing opinions about religion or politics, remove them from your list as conversation topics. If you argue about the same topic repeatedly with the same person, avoid talking about the topic or get out of the situation.
Reduce your to-do list � review your daily tasks and if there is too much on the list, separate the �shoulds� from the �musts.� Take the courage to remove those that are not necessary from your list.
Altering the Situation
Say what you feel and do not keep it within you � it helps to express your feelings in a gentle but firm way. Keeping it bottled within you will feed on your resentment and will not change the situation.
Compromise when necessary � When you expect another person to change, be willing to change yourself. The relationship has a better chance of improving if both parties are willing to respect and compromise with each other.
Assert when the assertion is called for � It does you no good to be a passive participant in a situation. Being assertive helps clear the atmosphere without feeling any guilt.
Adapting to the stressor
Look at the problem from another perspective. Instead of complaining about the heavy traffic, use it to your advantage like listening to a pleasant music or just enjoy the time.
Look at the big picture � Step beyond the present and try to see what a situation means I the future
Adjust your standards � Aiming for perfection opens doors to frustrations. Instead, aim for reasonable goals that are attainable for both yourself and the others.
Accept the things you cannot change �
Know when a situation is beyond your control � you cannot expect the day to go with your expectations. There are various external factors that you cannot predict and that come into play to influence a situation. Turn your focus to things that you can control.
Be positive and optimistic � When faced with challenges, consider the challenges as opportunities for your growth.
Be forgiving � Accept the imperfections of the world and that people are prone to mistakes.

The very subjectivity of stress makes it difficult to dissect. The experience and the level of stress differ with each person. Whatever the level of stress, the goal is the same, to achieve a balance in life that comes as a result of a stress-free life. The path to a stress-free life may not be easy, but it is achievable. Locating the causes of stress and the trigger points is your first step to successful stress management.
