Article Category: Self Help
Author Name: Melissa Stefanski, BS, MA
To change your life, you must start with the yourself. One needs to realize that a stressful event is not the problem, but how a person perceives and interprets the situation. Improving the self is, therefore, the first step in moving to a stress-free life. Self-improvement is also the first step to stress management.
There are, however, many who fail in the attempt to improve the self. The reason is that the concept of self-improvement is misleading, and people have the wrong impression of what it means.
The Self
An individual is born with a core self which is the essence of the person. When the core self receives love and value from the parents and the significant others, the self develops to its fullest potential. But, when the person knows only rejection and deprivation, the ego self appears to buffer the pains and frustrations received from the external world.
Therefore, when you talk about self-improvement, know which self you are trying to improve. You would not want to improve on the ego-wounded self. You would want to heal the ego self. Healing and improving are two different concepts, though the two are associated.
To improve the self is a skill or it could mean participating in a healing process. Take as an example a person whose goal is to lose weight. The response is to go on a diet and a regimen of exercise. The diet, however, will fail if the addiction to food has an underlying unhealed pain. Going on a diet will not resolve the unhealed pain. The person may need to go through a process of healing to improve the self.
It may happen, that to improve the self, one must be open to the likelihood that there are underlying fears, pains, and beliefs that hinder your progress and cause the stress in your life. Once you face these fears, it is easy to improve your self.
Strategies for Self-Improvement
When a person faces a threat, the usual response is to either run away from the threat or to confront it. These actions manifest an increased heart rate, fast and shallow breathing, sweating, and an adrenaline rush. Know these symptoms and manage your stress before it controls you. Below are strategies to help you manage the stress:
Keep your calm. When faced with a threat, refrain from losing your control. Remove yourself from the stressful situation and identify the following:
The trigger points in your emotional response
The reason for the pressure
The external influence that led to your emotional response
Is there an advantage from your response
The appropriateness of your response
Develop self-discipline. In managing stress, you need self-discipline. With self-discipline, you are in control of the situation and you can overcome its effects. Try to do the following:
A daily routine
A daily realistic and achievable goal
Know potential obstacles
Develop a positive habit
Formulate and action plan
Look for what you would consider enjoyable in your life
Reward yourself for each accomplishment
Time Management. How you use and maximize your time can help you regain control of a situation.
Accept that there is a time limit to what you do
Make a prioritized list of things to do
Avoid putting off tasks
Know when to stop accepting workloads
Monitor your progress
Recognize and avoid distractions
Come up with short-term deadlines
Be accountable
Improving the self to manage stress is not easy, especially when what hinders the improvement are the hidden fears and pains. Unless these fears and pains are brought out into the open and discussed, efforts at improving the self are bound to fail. It takes honesty, will, and commitment on your part to be on the road to self-improvement. Focus your attention on the vision of the future you to make the task of improving the self less difficult.
