Life is full of stressors which adversely affect a persons sense of well-being. Critical to a healthy and happy life is the maintenance of the individuals internal system to cope with the ever-changing external environment. It is to one's advantage, therefore, to undergo stress management to counter the onslaught of lifes stressors. But, the question is, what are the factors that trigger stress and how do people respond?
The Sources of Stress
Children and adolescents are not exempt from undergoing stressful situations in their environment. Children are vulnerable in the face of violence, such as neglect, physical and emotional abuse, and marital conflict. Children exposed to such violence are likely to have low self-esteem, show negative or antisocial behaviors, anxiety, and depression. Studies show that chronic parental violence and non-responsive environment can lead to a learned helplessness of the child.
Adverse life events lead to the onset of depression. Studies in human behavior show that the initial episode of depression occurs after a person experiences a severe negative event. The depression could result from a business failure, the loss of a job, a major medical illness like cancer, divorce or the loss of a loved one. Often, a person experiences anxiety before giving in to depression.
You can tell that a person is experiencing stress when he exhibits behaviors like heavy smoking and alcoholism. He also tends to be more accident prone, and have eating disorders and sleep problems. The greater the stress conditions, the more severe the consequences of stress. For instance, a person who works in a stressful environment tends to smoke more heavily than a regular smoker.
Stress Responses
How a person responds to stressful situations differ according to the intensity of the situation and its controllability. The response will also depend on how the person processes the information obtained from the situation.
The intensity of the situation could be affected by multiple stress sources and be more potent than a single factor. For example, in a work environment, time pressure and the presence of a threat raises the level of stress of a person. And, when a persons level of stress relates to poor interpersonal relationships and a persons heavy exposure to stressful events, the stress experienced multiplies.
A person can protect himself from stressful situations by developing coping mechanisms, having resources available like social support, optimism, and high self-esteem, finding meaning in the situation, and undergoing stress management.
An example of social support is a network of friends who help you in times of stress. Another example is finding meaning in what you do. You can overcome a stressful situation when you know you are working on a goal which matters much to you. Know the various techniques in stress management like relaxation techniques, hypnosis, meditation, and imagery among many others.
Conclusion
One cannot avoid exposure to stress situations in a complex society like today. The level of stress experienced would vary on the nature of the person experiencing the stress and the external factors that come into play.
Many stress management techniques have been developed to maintain the internal balance of a person that would enable the person to live a healthy and happy life.
As revealed by experts in the field of psychology, human beings are resilient and can survive any difficulties encountered in life. The peoples resiliency gives the motivation to have faith in the positive effects of stress management and the hope to recover from lifes difficulties.
