Hypnosis is a state of consciousness in humans where they are more likely to respond to a suggestion and act on it without thought or reason. People who are under this state of human consciousness are often in a trance-like state. When in this state, people do certain things, answer certain questions, and recall memories that they might otherwise have a hard time remembering when they are fully conscious. This is the reason why hypnosis is one of the best ways to teach stress management techniques.
The common term for this technique is hypnotherapy. People under a lot of stress can benefit from hypnotherapy as it can be used to force them to let go of their anxieties. During hypnotherapy, the therapist would bring the person to a state of hypnosis and provide suggestions on how to manage stress. The mind is more receptive during this state so anything that has been provided for the mind to understand is absorbed easily.
When the person comes out of the hypnotic state, its as if no time has passed and he is not aware that he has gone through it. The changes he will feel will only manifest when they are needed. In this case, it is when the person starts going through stressful situations. When this happens, the suggestions for relaxation and stress management will kick in. These actions become unconscious acts that will help the person manage stress better.
Self-hypnosis can be used for stress management techniques when a person does not have time to visit the doctor. The hypnotic suggestions come in the form of music and in repeated spoken words and instructional audio. In this process, the mind is not being placed in a trance-like state by a therapist, but by the audio cues.
The mind is being coaxed gently into performing proper stress management techniques through repetition and continuous reinforcement. The mind stores this knowledge at the back of its subconscious and brings it back to the forefront when the situation calls for it. In this case, once you encounter stressful situations, the mind is triggered to act the way it is supposed to based on the repeated instructions that it got.
Hypnosis is also another way to help calm the mind of someone who has been through so much stress. When the mind is too agitated and in a state of panic due to severe stress, the person becomes less likely to sit down and follow instructions. Hypnotherapists would then perform hypnosis to calm the person down long enough to become more receptive to suggestions.
Though it may seem like hypnosis is a fun and common thing, it is not something to play around with. It should also not be used as a replacement for actual therapy sessions with a qualified psychologist. If you feel that hypnotherapy can help you manage your stress, go ahead and request for a session. Otherwise, dont attempt to do it yourself without proper guidance.
