A myriad of people having social media accounts often opt to buy followers or the service of a robot these days in order to boost their numbers. Why am I making such a maybe 'disliked' statement today? Because it seems that too often people don't consider this following question.

What is more important to you, buying and getting 10,000 fake followers or likes, or having 100 real fans which will actually engage with you and could become potential clients?

I am a self-improvement & success coach. It is my job to tell you the truth and not just what is comfortable to you. However, you have come across this article and read it so far. You and I, all of us, want to have more followers. It is a fact. But do more views or followers mean more clients?

I feel ashamed for the ones who are trying to take shortcuts in building their empire. When are they going to learn that success has no shortcuts!

A few days ago, I made such a statement with a post on my Instagram account and yet so many people who usually follow me each day avoided the "like" tap like a plague. I wrote to one of my mentors and told him I had made a statement, and his response was: "The truth is always avoided... the more statements you will make the more people you will get who are like you... and that is attraction marketing."

There are Numbers and 'Numbers'.

I remember taking the decision to create an Instagram account solely for my business, and having to start it from scratch, learning it all from my mentors. At one point, it was not easy when comparing the number of followers I had with others in my field and I would doubt myself. But then I understood that numbers are not everything.

In the social media and marketing world, data is important but there are numbers and 'numbers'. The point is that some numbers are more important than others. I do agree that having a great number of followers looks good, but there are other facts that are more useful and vital.

Questions like "How many people engage with me on a regular basis?", "How many leads and sales social media is bringing me?" and "How much traffic is driven to my website by my social efforts?" is what you should ponder on.

But let's look for an instant on how people buy followers. There are tons of services out there which state to boost your numbers rapidly. Most of these services require payment. Nonetheless, there are a few different techniques they use.

The Robot Technique.

I have friends who use services such as 'Instabot' or 'Instagress' but these automations cheapen your "BRAND" overtime and you look spammy. How? Well, by linking your Instagram account and setting up hashtags, the service will start automatically 'like' and even comment for you.

An evident problem is that this is against Instagram's rules & terms and you can have your account definitely shut down for using it. And it happened to many, many people already. But my biggest issue is that people use such services to build their accounts, and it works to a certain extent.

After a while, a large amount of people that you are 'roboting' would see right through you and think less of you and your brand because of it. You look so spammy that they do not take you seriously anymore or won't even trust you.

Why did you ever start social media in the first place? To build a very real and authentic brand, weren't you? So I am asking you, why are you using these services if you are building your brand?

The Cheating Technique.

Some people follow numerous people each day, waiting for them to do the same, and then unfollow as soon as they follow. They wait a couple days, and unfollow those who don't follow them. This way they artificially increase their followers quickly. This again goes against social media terms and conditions and yet, many do it.

The Zombie Technique.

It is easy then to have a good guess on which people have paid for followers. I see countless people buying 100s, 500s, 1000s or even 10,000s of followers or likes. Usually, this kind of service has a database of zombie accounts that they use to follow or like you. These are often entirely inactive accounts with random names.

When you buy followers, you are simply buying numbers; you are not getting people who are interested in your brand or willing to engage with you. When buying followers, you are surely getting a huge number of fake accounts.

You lose integrity and reputation, and you look like a fake!

In this 21st century world, integrity is perhaps the most difficult thing to define. Real brands view you as trying to appear more popular than you are and doing it by dishonest means. Going from 100 followers or likes to 1,000 in the space of a couple days is bound to get potential clients suspicious, and then your brand and future would be the ones that suffer.

4 Tips on how to Grow Real Followers.

Engagement counts, not follower numbers. You need to work on building a community of people who are interested in you, your brand and your services because you will most surely reap the benefits if you do.

To build a real and authentic brand, there are no quick ways. You are going to need to take the time to reach out users organically who are more like you and who are interested in your brand. Here are 4 tips on how to do so:

1. Engage with your followers. If you are not engaging manually with your followers, do not expect them to engage with you. Make time to leave 10 comments a day, like other's pictures, and say hello using their first name if possible! Because if they are regularly seeing their name linked to your user name, they will certainly return the favor.

2. Search and refine your hashtags. It may take a little time, but go through your chosen hashtags and leave a comment on the finest pictures. And please, leave a real comment that is specific to the picture because casual comments will not get you anywhere.

3. Be active. Beyond weekly doing 'Call to action' and engaging with followers, give others something to engage with. Twice a day at least, post high quality pictures using the same refined hashtags, and this way you will gain more followers and engagement.

4. Provide value. By providing value to people and by finding appropriate accounts or people to follow which are likely to follow you back and engage with you. Remember, by growing your followers, it also good to build strong relationships with them and get more potential leads. It is better to have an influential and relevant person in your niche which follows you.

In Conclusion.

This 21st century is one of "get quick instant results... instant gratification". Everybody wants results without having to put the real work in, the work required. Everyone seems to forget that it all starts with grinding and hustling from the bottom, and that it is that ethic that will make of you an authority and a success over your life and not numbers.

The problem is, people want to have it all NOW and they forget that there is a process. Again, very few people have the patience and the determination to put in the work necessary. But do what is necessary now and you will have whatever you want in your future!

Integrity and honesty is everything to me – It should be yours too, particularly if you are playing the long term game of success.
