"Our life is shaped by our mind, we become what we think" - Gautama Buddha
When faced with a new challenge or when you're working to overcome an obstacle in your life or your current situation, there's NOTHING greater than the the power of positive thinking.
The idea is very simple: change YOUR thoughts, change YOUR life. The real struggle is taking the needed steps to make these changes on a daily basis.
More times than not, when we're faced with a STRUGGLE or CHALLENGE, we've the tendency to believe there is no way out and we're getting exactly what WE DESERVE.
Have you been there? I SURE HAVE!
This very belief is what holds us hostage and seemingly stuck in whatever challenge or situation is happening at the time. We become PRISONERS to our own thoughts and start budding up with the negative chatter going on in our mind. We BEGIN to believe it!
What if we changed the way we looked at things? What if we changed the way we see ourselves? What if we trained our mind to weed out those sneaky, negative thoughts and replaced them with powerful, positive affirmations, it would make a HUGE difference, don't you think?
In many Buddhist teachings you're taught to view your obstacles as lessons to strengthen your mind. When faced with overwhelming and critical situations or even people, the only way out is to change your thoughts on how you view these types of situations.
If you look at any challenge or problem you face and fall into the role of 'VICTIM' (which by the way, is so easy to do) you're not doing yourself any good and are certainly not helping yourself move past the current circumstance.
What you are doing is adding and abetting those negative voices by saying 'POOR PITIFUL ME!'
Instead the best road to take is to need to retrain your brain to see these types of challenges or situations as being temporary (which they are) and become a positive, motivated thinker.
"An entire sea of water can't sink a ship unless it gets inside the ship. Similarly, the negativity of the world can't put you down unless you allow it to get inside you." ― Goi Nasu
So how is it that we get 'OUR MITTS' on this genius tool of positive thinking? We have to work through the MAGICAL STORAGE room called our subconscious mind. We need to plant daily seeds of positive affirmations into our conscious mind in order to bring upon change to the subconscious mind.
It is vital for you to understand that these affirmations need to be put into your conscious mind so they can be nurtured into your subconscious mind.
REMEMBER - Your conscious mind commands and your subconscious mind obeys.
A great exercise offered in Louise Hay's work book " Love Yourself, Heal Your Life," has you recognize all your negative thought patterns and then change them with love infused affirmations.
The first thing you need to do is write down all your negative thought patterns, it does not matter how harsh tor degrading they are, you just need to honest with yourselves - it is the only way you can change your thinking.
After you've written all these negative thoughts down, cross them out and change them into POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Negative Thought: 'I'm such a Klutz.'
New Positive Affirmation: 'I become more proficient everyday.'
When you wake up each morning repeat these positive affirmations to yourself for at least 10 minutes (if you'd prefer do 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the evening), they'll eventually store themselves into your subconscious mind, destroying your old negative thought patterns.
"Your subconscious mind is subjective. It does not think or reason independently; it merely obeys the commands it receives from your conscious mind. Just as your conscious mind can be thought of as the gardener, planting seeds, your subconscious mind can be thought of as the garden, or fertile soil, in which the seeds germinate and grow." - Brian Tracy
Meditation is another way we can eliminate the pattern of negative chatter in our mind. Allowing yourself to sit daily for at least ten minutes and focusing on nothing but your breath helps gradually to clear your mind.
You can look up guided meditations on the internet or simply practice at home by sitting in a comfortable position, eyes closed and emphasize your focus on breathing in and out.
You may find it difficult your first few times, ( I know I did! My mind chats up a storm all the time) but please don't get discouraged! Just keep at it until you're comfortable with the concept of focusing on your breath and learning how to control your thoughts.
I use to get stressed and think it wasn't working at all but then I learned to accept my little pesky random thoughts that popped in and I realized I could relax and breathe.
With time, you'll gradually increase the length of time you spend mediating. It's such an AMAZING process.
If you struggle learning how to meditate on your own, you can do a google search and find local centres in your community where they offer meditation workshops/classes.
Having a POSITIVE mindset is a powerful thing. The first step for you is to learn how! It is not something that comes naturally, you take in negative thoughts all day long, through the media, in conversations and sadly, from the people around you. It takes constanting working on yourself EVERYDAY to rewire your mind towards positive thinking.
It takes PATIENCE, PRACTICE AND PERSISTENCE.
Remember ever staircase requires you take the first step. Take the first step towards re-programming your mind and see the wonders it can bring to your world.
