Words for encouragement can be extremely effective. When a good friend seems to be prevented from moving forward or having a hard time, the best words for encouragement may allow them to see their potential and raise their spirits. We all need words of encouragement at times.
For its effect of encouragement I thought I'd keep this article in its original present tense as I was writing from the volatile and often violent din of the cell block in prison, which is discussed in greater detail in the 2nd book of my ever-developing series. This book is titled Mastering Your Own Spiritual Freedom: Lessons from A Course in Miracles.
From the callus on my writing finger that prevents further blistering; to the letters with words of encouragement I receive, asking me to "hang tough" here in prison; to the memory of my daughter's first bicycle ride; to all the little but meaningful happenings in each of our lives: This is, as A Course in Miracles says, the "face of Christ," which is not a physical body.
Here is a story of a woman I have known for many years, who is about my age. She was partly responsible for my getting into the business I maintained for twenty-five years. In recent years we had totally lost touch with each other; however, through the modern computer age, she was able to learn of the situation that sent me to prison.
Connie has written me a few letters with words for encouragement and has, of course, given me the details of her story, which I'd like to share with you.
An event in Connie's life many years ago, although meaningless to the world at that time, has made a difference in the lives of many children today, around the world. Anyone who helps others discover the impact of the Holy Spirit, helps themselves, helps others, and helps the world move toward being a better place. This increases the vision for those who are ready.
In her efforts to keep me inspired, my friend Connie shared with me the facts about an individual who made a difference in her life with words for encouragement, which has helped her to help others. I was so glad to hear from her.
Connie was twenty-three years old at the time of her story, and trying to "chip" her way into the art world as a sculptor, while involved in painting as well.
Connie is very talented, and she was determined to acquire her art degree from the world-class school she was attending.
I remember the studio apartment with a fireplace where she lived. One damp winter night, when the wind was howling off Lake Erie, she longed for a fire and a good book. Instead, she had to turn in her final exam project at the art institute.
Her professor, a world-renowned artist himself, was wrapping up his year at the institute and was on his way back home to Paris. The next day her project was due for her final grade, and it would be the last time she would see the professor before he returned to France.
I can remember her telling me of the excitement that filled her, when at the end of the class the professor dismissed everyone, but asked Connie to stick around for a few minutes.
"I'd like to put a grade on your project right now," he told her. She thought it an odd request, as normally the professor could take days to grade a project of this magnitude, but she obliged him. She had no idea he was about to change her life with his words for encouragement.
As he handed her the grade, the professor said to her, "Connie, I want to talk to you about your future. I've taught around the world for a long time. I've seen lots of students pass through my classes." He smiled kindly. "You are one of the brightest of those students, but you don't know that about yourself."
Next he got serious and to the point with further words for encouragement. "As you leave here tonight, I want you to remember my words: You can do anything you want to accomplish. Before we part ways, I want you to promise me you will accept this within yourself."
He gave her the telephone number of a well-known art gallery owner in New York City he wanted her to contact. He told her to use his name as a reference.
His words burned into her memory when she realized he had no motive other than her best interests. She thought about this deeply, working hard on her schoolwork and juggling both a job and school.
She managed to graduate at the top of her class. After graduation she took a position at the well-known gallery in New York City, where she began to meet the right people from all over the world.
At the time I am writing this book from behind bars her words for encouragement seem to unlock the prison door for me.

Connie is now blessed with her own art gallery, where many of her own exhibits are placed. Connie has been fortunate in working with other great artists and influential business people from all over. One of them is a publisher of children's books and teaching aids.
But something was missing in Connie's life; she was unable in her younger years to have children of her own, which always troubled her. But she does have an adopted son, who is dear to her, now grown and on his own, and doing well.
Using her artistic talent, business skill, and her love of communicating at a level that talented and artistic children can understand, along with her wide-ranging professional resources, she now touches the lives of children around the world. Her instructional books, CDs, DVDs, and software are used by children who have a desire to pursue their growth in the world of art.
Connie would like to let her former professor know he was one of the most influential people in her life. The problem is, she found out he passed on a few years ago. Nevertheless, she senses that he smiles in a certain way as she remembers his words for encouragement.
To the Best in you
