Mistaking an African American student as a maintenance man is a form of microaggression that most people can easily relate to as worthy of correction. But what about a non-American raised in the U.S., who is fluent in English and commended for the good grasp of the language? For this non-American who may have felt a trace of discrimination, its considered as microaggression.
Microaggression can take any form and can spring up anytime. But what is microaggression in social interactions can have no more profound effect than it has in the workplace. It contributes to unnecessary costs in terms of turnover and lost productivity. Its a responsibility of every manager to understand what is microaggression to rise above its challenges in the workplace.
Defining microaggression
A microaggression is a spontaneous bias against another minority group or other personal qualities such as body type, religious inclinations, among others.
Gender microaggression
This is a microaggression that attacks gender differences and aims to oppress the weaker sex by labeling them as pussy and bitch or by objectifying them. This is most evident in situations where the woman is asked how she can fulfill executive roles at work while dealing with motherhood and managing the household.
Racial microaggression
This is a microaggression that focuses on racial differences. This is the most sensitive kind of microaggression primarily because of the historical context that built up people prejudices against a certain race. This is most evident in situations where the minorities are perceived to be inadequate for a white-collar position or higher management roles.
Sexist microaggression
This is a microaggression that centers on the LGBT or other sexual preferences. This is most evident in the misuse of the term gay and misconceptions about gay relationships.
Other microaggressions
There are microaggressions attacking ones social standing, religion or disability. These are evident in judgments on clothes, attitude with money, behavior in social gatherings, or perceptions of public practice of traditional customs.
Microaggression in the workplace
Theres no better place to deal with microaggression than in the workplace. This is where inherent qualities that make people different, such as skills, talents and intellect, are celebrated and rewarded. But despite this fact, microaggressions still proliferate in workplace interactions influencing relationships and productivity.
By engaging all workers in the companys quest for diversity and working together for a common goal is one step towards alleviating microaggressions. It also helps to have team building sessions, skill development and community involvements to make workers focus on their role in the company and their relationships with coworkers. This social consciousness corrects behavior and whittles down biases.
Dealing effectively with microaggressions in the workplace is possible. With the participation of managers and the top management, these disparaging microaggressive subtleties can be managed with better policies, imposition of appropriate ethical values and commitment to making lasting changes.
What is microaggression to people individually outside of work may not necessarily have the same impact as they do in the workplace. Aside from being a place where a code of conduct and professionalism is practiced, its where people achieve their self-worth and sense of belongingness. There might not be as much microaggressiveness as there is in the streets, but curbing its effects at work is just as important, if not more.
Keywords: microaggression, microaggression and teamwork, leadership and microaggression, emotional intelligence and microaggression, microaggressions in the workplace, dealing with microaggressions at work, gender and microaggression, being black in the workplace, microaggressions in everyday life
