Sometimes, the remark may come from a friend, a supervisor, or a stranger. It may have been given casually and without any intent to degrade, yet it is something that causes one to feel out-of-place. Microaggressions also known as micro-inequities still happen in everywhere and at any time. Microaggressions in everyday life occur because some people unknowingly make comments or ask questions that turn out to be derogatory to the recipient.
This persists probably because making insinuations have long been practiced, because biases have not been completely eradicated, or maybe because people do not yet completely understand discriminatory actions. Sometimes, people from marginalized sections experience microaggressions because they or the people around them do not know how to handle the situation, or choose to not act on the circumstance.
Microaggressions in everyday life could happen to anyone because of his or her gender orientation, race, cultural background, age, or color. It is a sad situation because these traits should not define their totality as a person, their achievements, or their abilities. They are being restricted by the limited perceptions others have made of them. These people may thus feel a degree of insecurity in the school, the workplace, the streets, with friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and even strangers.
The fact that microaggressions indeed occur in everyday life calls for action to be taken. The awareness campaign against these offending actions however has to be initiated by those who have been wronged. As the ones placed in uncomfortable and alienating situations, they are the ones who know about the issue well: why it matters, the ways by which it is done, and how it can be addressed.
Taking on the task of dealing with micro-inequities requires courage from an aggrieved person. After all, he or she will have to put his or her feelings aside to be able to address the problem properly and avoid further complications. By reining in ones emotions, this person can look at the event itself, process it properly and avoid the possibility of attacking the persons who gave the comment. Bringing the matter into light via a diplomatic and tactful discussion with the other people involved will pave the way towards resolution of the specific problem and awareness about microaggressions and its effects. Handling the matter without prejudices is a powerful and compelling example to those who have wronged him or her.
Taking on the task of advocating against microaggressions in everyday life however is another stage that a person can take. This will firstly require empowering others who have similarly experienced being pushed towards a minority status. Secondly, it requires boosting the awareness of people so that they can join in promoting true equality at all times.
Microaggressions in everyday life is still a reality for many people, but with the actions that every concerned individual takes no matter how small this predicament will not stay for long. The more everyone campaigns against these forms of discrimination, the more will those involved feel safer and be more trusting.
