Ones color supposedly should not be a determinant of ones abilities and capabilities. It should not also be a determinant of how one should be perceived by other people. While awareness campaigns against color discrimination have awakened many a people, the challenge of being black in the workplace seems to have persisted to this day.
A comment or question may have been given casually by someone who is unaware that it makes a damaging impact on the recipient. The fact that many black people continue to struggle against discrimination in the professional arena proves that while there is awareness, the elimination of biases is not yet complete. It could be because old practices are difficult to shed off or that many have not yet gone beyond the literal meanings of racial sensitivity.
Feeling ostracized in the workplace on account of ones skin color is however a ruinous situation to be in. The recipient of these remarks may induce one to question his or her self-perception and to be constantly wary when dealing with different people. A constant feeling of discomfort, awkwardness, or embarrassment will somehow seep into a workers daily dealings and activities. Needless to say, this could affect ones performance and work attitude, not to mention that it could shape the office culture in a negative way.
The reality is that although historical experiences, research-based literature, and policies have outlawed discrimination, being black in the workplace is still a concern for a significant number of people. This is because some remain to have biases and are vocal about it. Others might have subconscious biases and may unwittingly slip laden remarks. Other people might also just not be aware enough to be careful in phrasing questions and ideas. Although these regularly happen in the workplace, resolution does not come easy. In some situations, people are unaware while those who are may not know how to handle the situation or choose to not act on it.
It is an additional challenge but for many people, being black in the workplace also means one has to stand up and fight microaggressions. This, he or she will have to do on top of the daily grind. It is however necessary, as knowing the situation empowers him to make others aware of it. While this means having to put ones emotions in check, he or she has to do so to be able to prioritize harmony for all.
Given the negative notions about the black people, a black employee has to be extra careful to maintain a peaceful atmosphere while seeking resolution to the problem. It is a precarious situation for a person of color thus an objective approach will allow him or her to focus on the problem and make proper considerations to be able to bring this matter up for discussion with colleagues. It requires careful treading and diplomacy to avoid getting into the traps of feeling vulnerable or otherwise too strong and risk being placed in a disadvantageous light.
Nonetheless, being black in the workplace does not impede one from educating and empowering oneself and others in a similar situation to stand up and put a stop to microaggression. Likewise, being black in the workplace does not prevent one from educating and empowering those who do not share their situation to join in the call against microaggressions.
