A female in a male-dominated environment, or a male in a female-dominated environment may be given snide comments about ones sexuality or capability. Likewise, a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, or queer orientation may also subject one to unwarranted comments. These forms of microaggressions or micro-inequities may have been stated by one who is unaware that an offense was made. Often, this occurs because it is an accepted practice in a particular culture or because people are not aware that such comments can make a recipient feel ostracized.
Gender and microaggression issues occur in homes, in schools, at the workplace, and in public places. It could happen among family members, friends, colleagues, or strangers. Although the level of acceptance for different sexual orientations have grown over the centuries, microaggressions still happen nowadays and impact on a persons self-worth. This in turn will affect how he or she sees and relates with the people around. It is a subtle problem, but it can bring about larger problems in a society.
Awareness campaigns addressing gender and microaggression concerns must therefore continue to gain ground. While many people have grown more assertive in promoting gender equality and are more careful about avoiding discriminatory practices, remnants from traditionally-accepted behaviors still contribute to micro-inequities. As casual as these comments may seem, it could make a recipient feel excluded, no matter his or her attainments or status in life.
As these problems are quiet in nature, it is up to the one offended to step up and out to bring the matter to light. Having to deal with gender and microaggression matters is however not easy as it requires the one offended to act on it. This person has to keep his or her reaction in check to achieve the greater goal of harmony. He or she has to be able to stay calm and keep an objective stance when faced with an unfavorable situation. After all, being reactive may place him or her at a disadvantage.
Shying away or folding up may build that feeling of vulnerability and inadvertently allow the unintending transgressor to persist with the behavior. On the other hand, taking on a tough stance may reinforce a feeling of self-righteousness on the part of the offended party and thereby distort other peoples perceptions. Staying cool will allow one to think clearly and find appropriate measures to resolve the problem, and avoid causing pain or offense to others.
As uncomfortable and difficult as it may be, taking on the first step against microaggression is necessary for the offended party to be understood, to be an inspiration to others experiencing the same plight, and to promote reciprocal respect and consideration among members in a group.
The process of enlightening and empowering others is long and arduous but every effort will amount to something. Awareness is the initial step, and it could take as long as how willing people will accept it. Educating different minds from different backgrounds could be a bumpy road and will thus require many strategies. The end goal is however, worth it. After all, no one deserves to be excluded on account of ones gender.
