As the world gets more interconnected, people also get more connected to their computers and mobile devices. Although thought-triggered cybernetics and mind-reading personal robotic assistants are still in the realm of science fiction, digital virtual assistants are bridging the gap between humans and tech at home, in the office and when out and about.
What Is a Digital Virtual Assistant??
These programs or applications use voice recognition software to hear what the user says and come up with responses that are appropriate and accurate. They organize schedules; keep in contact with friends, family and business associates and help with everything from whether or not to bring a sweater when going out, to how a stock market portfolio is performing.
While there are many of these programs on the market, 4 relatively new ones deserve a second look.
Facebook's M
Instead of simply providing information, Facebook's assistant, called simply "M," will be able to tackle tasks like ordering flowers on an anniversary or making a reservation for a business lunch. With an astute artificial intelligence engine, it learns from continued use in order to better serve the user. One thing that's different about M is that actual people work continuously behind the scenes to improve the user experience by inputting new questions, responses and capabilities as the virtual assistant is utilized. Please note, Facebook's M is not available in all areas of the globe.
Google's Google Now
Whether on a PC desktop, a smartphone, tablet or even Google glasses or the Android Wear watch, Google's answer to virtual assistance delivers concise, quality information at the appropriate time based on the user's needs. This is done by using "Now Cards," which are small graphic and text cards that appear on the screen. Card options include current events, weather reports, traffic and maps, scheduling, entertainment options, reminders and travel assistance.
Amazon's Echo
An unobtrusive black tower about nine inches tall, the Echo from Amazon offers voice control inside the home. The powerful and ever-learning Alexa engine transforms the voice commands picked up by the powerful microphone - even from across the room - and delivers precisely what the user requires.
Additional options are updated frequently and automatically. Some capabilities include: playing music, reading books aloud, reciting sports scores and the news of the day, organizing schedules and setting alarm clocks and getting information direct from the cloud such as weather reports, Wikipedia information and more.
Amazon's Echo integrates with many popular connected home systems as well. This means a few words can dim the lights, change the thermostat temperature, arm the security system, start the lawn sprinkler or even open the blinds.
Sirius
Although Sirius doesn't have a sleek gadget of its own or consist of pop-up app windows; the programming behind it can help other developers create proprietary digital virtual assistants of their own. The open-source system combines voice recognition, image recognition and artificial intelligence to formulate answers based on the two input sources.
This allows users to not only ask questions directly, but also take pictures with a smart phone and get information about the object or location directly.
As the world gets more automated, an increasing number of digital virtual assistants will wax and wane in popularity. The ability to talk to a computer system and get information or make things happen will eventually transform the world so it's virtually indistinguishable from one imagined in science fiction.
