The call for diversity is growing and it�s not limited to casting actors for a film or show. Numerous public and private institutions worldwide have responded positively to the call, but some are still stuck in their conservative employment policies. As an entrepreneur and an employer, the last thing you want is to skip opportunities�in this case, the opportunity to gain new insights that enhance your employee productivity and business operations. It is beneficial in many ways but ensuring diversity in the workplace is not completely free from any challenges.
Challenges
The number one challenge with implementing a diversity plan is perceptual barriers. Cultural differences are also a possible problem, but sometimes, it�s the perception from old employees that keep them from embracing new hires as colleagues. This perception affects retention later on.
Ensuring diversity in the workplace involves hiring people of different ethnicities or nationalities. This leads to another challenge: communication barriers. However, this obstacle is not just between workers of diverse ethnic backgrounds. Even if they speak the same language, communication barriers are still possible due to generational gaps between your employees.
The most difficult challenge with executing a diversity plan is your workforce�s resistance to change. Times are changing. The purchasing power of minorities is increasing. Policy-makers are making sure that minorities receive fair and equal treatment. There is no reason to remain conservative when it comes to selecting members of your workforce. The sooner you recognize that, the sooner you can orient your current employees.
Achieving diversity in the workplace doesn�t happen overnight. It takes years to fulfill this objective. The abovementioned challenges could prolong the process but there are solutions that can help you manage them.
Solutions
The first thing you can do is to conduct a survey among your employees. Customize an employee satisfaction survey for your workforce. Add some open-ended questions asking their opinion about inclusion of people from diverse backgrounds.
Carrying out a survey is a way of assessing the possible resistance towards diversity in the workplace. This is also a good way to gather ideas as to how you can implement it.
To counter resistance, you have to make sure that your current employees feel included in the planning process. The survey helps you do that but you can enhance their sense of inclusion by recognizing their contribution. Aside from surveys, you can also conduct meetings between teams and between their team leaders and you.
Don�t forget to review your employment policies. Talk to your human resources personnel about clauses that limit candidates for certain positions. For instance, disregard gender and ethnicity in your qualification requirements. Instead of emphasizing age, focus on their years of experience. Also, you might want to make your job openings available to foreign workers.
Make your current and potential employees appreciate diversity in the workplace by promoting deserving individuals from the minorities. Additionally, conduct diversity training to help develop camaraderie among your workers.
It may take some time before your business reaps the advantages from this change. The most important thing is you heed to the call, and your customers and suppliers are likely to value your brand for it.
