You know that feeling .. the one you get when you have several hours of work ahead? Oh, yes, THAT one. The overwhelming feeling of EXHAUSTION before you even get started.
Even if you ENJOY the work ahead, it can be hard to focus for a lengthy period of time. I know, I've battled the "wandering mind when a project drags on and on and it seems never to get done" syndrome! I finally had to sit myself down, give myself a lecture and come up with a plan. The results of the battle with my wandering mind was implementing a system of working in blocks of time.
I can't stress enough how AMAZING this has been for eliminating STRESS in my work day.
If you work from home, work on a computer, or have a lengthy job at hand, you may feel stress headaches slowly CREEPING on. The BEST WAY to avoid these, nasty, sometimes crippling pain in the head situations, is to break up your day into blocks of time.
I personally like working for 1 hour and then taking a 30 minute break afterwards to rest and do something that I enjoy. I also know others that work for 45 minutes and take a 15 minute break, and this may help better for scheduling as it equals an hour and you can easily form a schedule.
Here are 3 BENEFITS you receive when YOU work in blocks of time besides the elimination those nasty, stress induced headaches.
You have something to look forward to.
On those days when you're working and you feel like there is no END IN SIGHT, your mind quietly whispers a reminder about the break coming up, allowing you permission to step away and get some rest and suddenly your attitude instantly changes! I've found that planning things that I REALLY love to do for my first few breaks helps me the most, things like simply taking a walk, reading from my favorite mystery novel or grabbing my sketch pad.
You get to let your brain rest and recoup from the hard work.
If you don't allow your brain to rest you're just pushing through the work and it can really take a toll on your brain and make it work overtime. A CALM and REFRESHED mind actually increases productivity and creativity! It's amazing!!
You can have a better sense of scheduling, and ensure that you have time for both work and self-care throughout the day.
You'll begin to understand how much TIME is needed to get your work done, where you WASTE time (we all do) and develop a better scheduling system. Plus as you know by now, that I am a huge advocate for SELF-CARE, therefore having these times of breaks throughout the day, makes it a perfect way for you to dive into several self-care activities that will help you mentally and physically.
FUN FACT: Taking these breaks and letting your brain rest is a SELF-CARE act in on its own!
As you can see, working in blocks of time can really do wonders for your mind and help you have a more productive workday, without the STRESSORS that you would typically have. The KEY is to spend the breaks 100% on yourself and stay true to the timer. When your hour is up, stop right where you are and walk away for your break.
Let me know how this schedule works for you. I would love to hear more success stories on block timing!
