I've crashed and burned in the past. Not really surprising, many of us do. Worked too many hours, never taking time for myself, ending up so tired and run down, I had to take too many days off to recoup. Boy, I do so love to learn the hard way! Now though, I know just how important self-care is to my health.
Self-care is often neglected, especially as a business owner or mother. So many moms have a hard time finding time for themselves, but then if you add business in the mix, self care completely disappears. Sound familiar?
There are reasons that you need self-care for your mental health, and I'll not only share with you why, but also give you ways that you can work it into your daily life.
Going through your DAILY life, things can get overwhelming. Sometimes you feel that you have NO TIME for yourself, you feel yourself FALLING APART, and sometimes you may not even feel COMFORTABLE in your own skin.
This leads to having poor mental health, degrees of sadness, and sometimes even depression. Hundreds of people are diagnosed with anxiety and or depression everyday, and you wouldn't believe how a little bit of self-care could help avoid this from happening.
MEDITATION
One of my personal favorite things to do for self-care that can be easily added into my daily routine, is meditation. The best part about this is, there's a way to meditate that doesn't require any extra time taken from your day.
Yes, that's right, no extra time to your day!!
If you go on YouTube and search "DEEP MEDITATION", you will find 5 and 8 hour loops of calming deep meditation music, such this one: 6 Hour Deep Healing Music. If you play this as you fall asleep, your body will naturally meditate and your sleep quality will increase.
You will notice that after a few days of doing this, you'll feel LESS tired, as the sleep that you did get between a crying baby every few hours, barking dogs and a way to active brain, was high QUALITY sleep.
If you DO have a few minutes in the morning, you could try this one (I use it) and get a full hour of MEDITATION in just 12 minutes! Can you believe in, a full hour? I find it a wonderful way to start my day. Click here to try Zen12.
MORNING PAGES
Another thing that I love to do only takes about 5-10 minutes, depending on how much you want to schedule.
As a business owner I can't spare too much time during the day, but I started setting my alarm for 5 minutes earlier and doing this one during breakfast. This BEAUTIFUL thing is called morning pages. MORNING PAGES are basically a "BRAIN DUMP" where you write a set number of pages and you are just writing everything down that is on your mind.
Yes, YOU dump IT ALL on paper!
I personally like to write 2 morning pages and write everything from my thoughts on the day before, what I plan to do today, my STRESSORS, and things that I look forward to.
This is something that has greatly improved my MINDSET as I feel almost as if I had a mini-therapy session with myself, getting all of my feelings off of my chest.
YOGA
If you have a bit more time to spare in your day, or you're open to staying awake for an extra 20-30 minutes at night, you can do yoga.
Yoga is not only a great thing to RELAX and FOCUS on your thoughts, but also a great way to feel good physically. Yoga can be started on a very small scale, and you don't need to be flexible to do it. That is a common misconception with yoga, but you really only need to be able to stretch slightly and focus on your body, breathing, and movement.
You can look up beginner yoga techniques, such as these from Yoga Journal and start with 2-5 poses that seem the best to you. I changed mine up a few times until I found something that really worked for me. Going to a guided yoga class could also be an option, but of course would take more time out of your day. Yoga can be great for the MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT, and I recommend to anyone who needs an extra stress reliever.
Self-care is incredibly important, and can really be the SAVING GRACE when it comes to keeping your sanity. Life can become overwhelming but applying even one small technique for your self-care needs can help your quality of life improve greatly. If you have the extra time and understand the importance of self-care, doing all three of the techniques mentioned above could work great for you.
Something as simple as enjoying your favorite cup of WARM TEA in silence for 5 minutes can even do wonders for your mind. Wishing you the best on your self care journey!
