Old West Feminine Gambler and Outlaw
MADAME DUMONT: born Simone Jules?
Where she was born is unclear, France? Perhaps New Orleans? Actually not important, however her history is extremely interesting. Even her name appears to be somewhat puzzling.
Decades before Poker Alice and Lottie Deno came along Eleanore "Madame" Dumont went far for herself as a blackjack-dealing bettor and gunslinger. Much of the Madame's early life is unidentified. In 1854, when the record of her activities becomes more concrete, she arrived in Nevada City, CA as the Gold Rush was still at its peak.
Absolutely nothing is really known about her early life, but she arrived in San Francisco and discovered a task dealing cards at the Bella Union Hotel-- most sources state it was around 1849 or possibly as late as 1854. She was a small, dignified and aloof lady, who skillfully managed the pressures of the task while handling unruly customers. She readied at her task too-- perhaps too great since she was implicated of card-sharping and relieved of her responsibilities.
In her early daring years, Eleanore had behaved as a lady who was understood to entice men simply by virtue of her manners. As she aged, however, her body "plumped" out a bit and a growth of hair (formerly just a great line) on her upper lip began darkening. After that, her own character is stated to have coarsened-- whereas she dissuaded cursing in the previous she now joined in and consumed scotch rather of her normal wine. When a drunk miner uttered the words "Madame Moustache" the moniker stuck.
Montana and MADAME DUMONT
Other highlights of Madame Dumont's checkered career included a short stint in 1869 as a real "madam" in San Francisco, utilizing her weapons to conserve Fort Benton, MT from a smallpox epidemic, and tutoring a really young Calamity Jane.
In 1860 the Madame opened a brand-new Dumont Palace in Virginia City, NV during the Silver Rush.
Missing her life as a roaming gambler/gunslinger Dumont sold out in 1863 and started roaming the mining towns and gambling establishments in Montana and Idaho, blending card-playing in with short flings with outlaws in Handsome Henry Plummer's vast company.
In Bannack, MT Madame Dumont purchased into a collaboration with an established casino and whorehouse owner called McHarney. Legend has it Eleanore conspired to have her new fan John MacFarlane provoke McHarney into pulling his gun during a gambling conflict, during which MacFarlane blew McHarney away.
MacFarlane was discovered not guilty by reason of self-defense and became Madame Dumont's brand-new partner. His ultimate fate is unknown but Eleanore eventually offered out yet once again and returned to life on the road.
By 1874 Dumont was a bettor in Panamint, CA and by 1876 was dealing blackjack in renowned Nonessential, SD.
Like all professional bettors Eleanore's luck lessened and streamed until in September of 1879 two gamblers in Bodie, CA cleaned her out of every cent she had left.
She obtained $300 from a good friend so she might open her table. That night she perhaps made a mistake and ended up losing all the cash in her till. It is stated she arose from her table, without uttering a word to anyone, and delegated roam about a mile outside of town where she drank a bottle of wine laced with morphine.
On September 8 her body was discovered, her head resting on a rock, and a note close-by mentioning that she was "tired of life."
