There is something about the fall season that makes me think of change and letting go. The leaves turn such beautiful colors as if an artist took out their palate and painted each one a bright color of orange, red or yellow.
I hear people moaning and groaning, like GHOULS on Halloween, over the struggles they have in their lives. Unsure of what they WANT to do or what to do next, their hesitation on whether to make a move or not and sadly, I often hear how they ABSOLUTELY hate what they are doing.
Nature sets a FANTASTIC example for us, if we're open to see it, to take that INITIAL step and paint our own lives a different color.
I am.
I am grabbing the nearest paint brushes and CREATING A NEW COLOR in my life. YES! I'm at it again.
It's become too comfortable. TOO COZY. I've sunk into too much of a routine. If I want to create movement in my life, things NEED to shift, to change.
It's been almost a year since I came back from Portugal.
I settled in, started to get comfortable, the old routine was so easy to slip into.
You know those TYPES of routines, you have them.
It's like those things you do when you come home after a long day at work.
You're tired, you put on your FAVORITE old sweater, sweat pants and comfy slippers with those holes in them. The ones you've hung onto because the FIT IS PERFECT and OH, SO comfortable. You pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back and AHHH, the tension and stress of the day, slowly leaves and you relax. Sound familiar?
It didn't take me long to STEP right back into the old ways.
It still felt natural.
It sure felt comfortable
Most of all, it DEFINITELY didn't feel scary.
But if I'm honest, TRULY honest.
Nothing was really the same.
Things had changed.
Adjustments had been made.
I was still family, the 'NAN' to my own grandkids and all their friends
Yet I was a more of a visitor, which is really how it should be.
Complacency SLOWLY set in, just like a sloth when it moves across the road.
I hate THAT feeling. The sameness of days JUST SUCKS, it leaves a bitterness in my mouth and before I know it, the old thought, (which I thought I'd squashed) 'IS THAT ALL THERE IS?', started replaying in my head.
I found myself feeling like one of those solid wind-up toys. WIND ME UP and I turn one way and do that then TURN ME around and I do it again.
Routine becomes the new GAME OF THE DAY and if you jig the wrong way, you might just tumble over, like the WIND-UP toy does when it runs out of steam.
I woke up one day last week, knowing it was time to SHAKE things up in my life again. It's time to RATTLE my cage, continue what I had started last year and go after what I want and what I feel will make me happy.
Being totally honest, CARDS ON THE TABLE - I fall victim to my OWN self sabotage, just like you do. It's a common human challenge. It's so much easier to stay within our OWN COMFORT ZONES, telling ourselves that while we might not be happy, at least we are doing OKAY.
Settling, though, is never an option.
Living a life that makes you unhappy is not only a WASTE OF YOUR TIME but of your own personal VALUE.
Despite the fear you might feel when you think of changing your world, you know what I say is true. You are throwing away PRECIOUS MOMENTS to live that way.
Me, I'd rather SHAKE it up, face MY FEARS and walk towards the unknown, which is what I've decided to do.
What's next, I don't really know. I'm tossing around either heading back to Portugal with a year's Visa in hand and using it as a base, or just 'BACKPACKING' to the places that call to me. France, Italy, Crete and Iceland to name a few.
What do you think? If it was you, where WOULD YOU go? Would you find a place to make your base camp or would you popped around, lIving in one place long enough to get a feel for it and then more on to the next? Would you change jobs? Move to a new city?
What would your 'HAPPY LIFE' look like to you?
"If my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself."- Rick Riordan
