Non-stick coatings such as Teflon arent usually sought for household use and do-it-yourself projects. One reason is that these coatings tend to be pricier than regular paint. For those in the industrial sector though, applying non stick coatings is the best option for equipment and products alike.
If you are applying Teflon yourself, below are some suggestions you may want to know about the application process. The coating may be known to be durable but the method of application can still play a factor in its durability. Errors in the application process can also mean additional costs so its best to have knowledge to avoid problems later on.
Thoroughly clean the surface prior to the application.
Surface preparation requires a lot of time and effort, but this act can make or break the durability and finish of your coating later on. To prepare the surface, you need to do some washing, wiping and scrubbing until the surface is totally free from any blemish. By doing this, you remove all possible contaminants that can lead to problems such as blisters and peeling of non stick coatings.
Roughen the surface after cleanup.
When the surface is not properly cleaned, the contaminants lessen the adhesive properties of non stick coatings. However, clearing it up will not suffice to make the coating stick to the surface strongly. It needs roughening up.
There are two methods used to roughen a surface. The first one is grit blasting which calls for an abrasive medium. The second option is chemical etching. Both methods cause the coating to stick better as compared to applying it on a smooth surface.
Apply coating according to its dry film thickness (DFT).
Coating manufacturers are required to provide a product data sheet (PDS) for their respective products, where you can look for the DFT level of non stick coatings. DFT refers to the recommended thickness of paint for each application. Ignoring this can result to problems such as low-gloss (for thin applications) and mud-cracking (for thick applications). Before you apply paint, make sure you read its PDS first and apply the right amount under DFT.
You should also be more mindful of DFT when you are applying Teflon and other types of nonstick coatings to non-metal surfaces. In the textile industry for instance, Teflon is preferred by numerous carpet-manufacturers due to the ease of cleaning of the Teflon-coated carpets. However, the coating must be applied thinner than coating meant for metal surfaces.
4. Allow the coating to cure properly.
Just like proper thickness, there is also a recommended temperature and curing time for non stick coatings application. For polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coatings, the recommended curing time is 10 minutes. When it comes to heating temperature, it should be within the range 750 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit.
In most instances, the application of nonstick coatings such as Teflon requires specialized equipment that is not available for personal use. If you are into car dealership, manufacturing or any other business that deals with metal coating, it will be much better to depend on a service provider who is equipped with the sophisticated tools in applying Teflon.
