I'm changing things up, just a tiny bit this week. I burnt the night oil the last few nights while I tossed around how lonely it can be if you work from home. I wanted to share my thoughts with you.
I'm sure you've had times where you SAT and DREAMT about being self-employed and working alone. I bet, just like those sugar-plums that danced in your head at Christmas, the whole idea brought SMILES to your face. You imaged the benefits such as, there'd be no one taking that last mug of coffee you so coveted, there'd be no one looking over your shoulder telling you to get to work NOW and boy, YOUR lunch wouldn't show up missing and no one seems to know where it went.
HOLD ON .. There's just one slight catch that might damper your sails. People who work from home often feel SECLUDED and ALONE. I can definitely attest to that feeling! Connecting with others is often not possible and it could even become unbearable at times. You might find yourself ANTSY and wishing for company, ANY COMPANY so before you start talking to your walls, take the 'bull by the horn' and make some changes.
Take some time, research and discover different ways to connect with others:
If your home is your office, venture out and look for an alternative office space.
If MONEY were no object, think about getting an office space where there are other people. If that's not an option, check out companies like wework.com or officenomads.com where you can rent a space and be surrounded by ENTREPRENEURS like you. There will be ample opportunities to CONNECT and CHAT IT UP with them plus there may well be additional bonuses such as high speed internet, coffee, tea, meeting rooms and maybe a COUCH to nap on.
Keep in touch with your buddies. Even though you've left your job to venture out on your own, it doesn't mean you have to SEVER the ties you made. You don't have to lose those close ties you made. It'll take some work to STAY IN TOUCH but it will be worth it in the end. It's definitely harder to make new friends when you don't have people surrounding you.
Take a few moments each week to send out an email or make a quick call to stay in touch.
Search out others who are self-employed. If you are feeling isolated, you can bet there are others out there just like you. YOU AREN'T ALONE! Wander through your social media sites, post messages, comment on others posts, start taking advantage of the benefits of social media. You can build online friendships and meet some AMAZING people from around the world. It's not quite the same thing as getting together face to face but you can still communicate online and build a rapport.
Can't meet in person, too far away? With the amazing advances in technology you can use programs like Skype or Facetime, be connected in seconds and chat away fact to face anytime.
Find local networking opportunities. More and more people are working from home, digital nomads and entrepreneurs. Use Google and do a search for local meetups, business networks and other opportunities to CONNECT with like-minded people. Not only will it give you the chance to connect with others, it just might help you grow your business. Get out as often as possible, MINGLE is the name of the game and have fun while doing it! Start today by checking out meetup.com or your local chamber.
Eating lunch alone sucks, don't do it!. We all do lunch. Set a goal to find as many lunch partners as you can. Be CREATIVE, think outside the box. Look beyond your good friends, family, next-door neighbors, old buddies, to your new connections you've made networking as well as any ONLINE friends who live close by. With all those choices there is no reason why your lunch calendar won't be filled each month!
Get a furry friend. if you are an animal lover, you might consider getting a dog. While a fish or cat might be better suited to your style, they aren't as interactive as a dog. Your dog will always be HAPPY to see you and have you around. They love you unconditionally. A cat is much more independent and just might not care, at least until feeding time. There is no one who will understand how absolutely AMAZING you are better than your dog. What a huge boost for the ego!
Develop a routine. On the surface, it might not make sense but developing a set routine helps to ELIMINATE the feelings of being alone. It's so easy to start daydreaming and aimlessly stare out the window all day or get sucked into scrolling through your Facebook or Twitter feeds when you work by yourself. Having a set schedule, knowing what you should be doing and when helps to keep you on track plus you know exactly when and where your next human connection will be. Pull out your planner and start a schedule today.
Find a gym, sign up and starting using it! Gym's are another EXCELLENT way to meet and connect with people. If you set aside the same time each day to visit the gym, you'll start noticing the same people there each day. What an OPPORTUNITY for you to connect and make new friends. Plus you will get into shape which is a huge benefit to your health.
Hang out with your clients. Even though you work online you might have local clients. A great way to build RAPPORT with them is to take time to visit them, invite them to coffee or lunch and checking to see how things are going. They could well need the break, too. You'll EXCEED their expectations, build a deeper relationship and add a BOOST to your social life.
You don't have to be in isolation just because you work from home. Take the initiative by doing some research, you'll find plenty of people to share your day with.
Suffering doesn't need to be the NAME OF THE GAME when you work from home. There are numerous different ways to make connections and develop regular human contact. Build on them, stop feeling alone and really begin to embrace the benefits of your lifestyle.
