Medicare Part D, also referred to as Medicare Drug Coverage, is an optional component of the national social insurance program. When the Social Security Act that gave way to Medicare was signed into law in 1965, parts C and D were not yet included. Part D became officially available 40 years later. The Medicare Modernization Act that included drug coverage and modifications in Medicare Advantage Plan were signed into law in 2003 and went effective in 2006.
A hospitalization insurance and medical insurance are the components of the original Medicare. The aforementioned benefits are referred to as Medicare Part A and Part B respectively. Once you are enrolled in the Medicare program, you are automatically signed up for the hospitalization insurance. For the medical insurance, you have to apply for it but its not required. The same thing goes with Medicare Part D.
Reasons to Apply for Drug Coverage
Though noncompulsory, it is still beneficial to have drug coverage under Medicare. Part D offers subsidy for prescription drugs and insurance premiums for such necessities. Subsidized prescription drug costs are beneficial if you have a chronic condition which requires maintenance drugs.
If you dont have any long-term condition, the subsidized insurance premium and prescription drug will become a good investment once you reach your 70s. In this age, you become more vulnerable to different ailments which you can manage by taking some prescriptions.
However, by this age, you are more likely dependent to your pension alone for your everyday expenses. Your pension may be insufficient to cover medication costs. This is when Medicare Part D becomes useful.
Eligibility
Being enrolled in Medicare Part A already makes you eligible for part D. It doesnt matter whether you are enrolled in part B or not.
However, if you signed up for part C which is basically Medicare Advantage Plan, you are not qualified to apply for part D. Medicare Advantage Plan already has clauses for drugs. Such clauses may not coincide with the clauses under part D. To avoid conflicts later on, you should just choose between parts C and D. If you pick part D, you can just apply for a supplemental insurance as an alternative to Medicare Advantage Plan.
How to Apply
Before you apply for Medicare Part D, make sure you havent signed up for part C. If you have, you will be dis-enrolled in both benefits. Once your enrollment is cancelled, you go back to original Medicare which cover parts A and/or B.
Medicare provides a list of insurance companies for your drug coverage. You have to choose on your own. It is recommended to pick an insurance provider that is just within your area. Aside from this, you also have to check the drugs covered by the program.
Choosing an insurance provider could turn out to be a difficult task, especially if you have no idea how it works. That is why there are insurance brokers such as Ted Guys Medigap Pro that is based on Arizona. Applying for Medigap Pro services wont hurt your Medicare Part D application unlike a Medicare Advantage Plan.
