Health conditions and illnesses often accompany people who enter their 60s. The need for increased medical attention is evident in this age group, but medical costs are soaring sky-high without any indication of slowing down. This is the reason behind the utmost importance of Medicare supplement policies. What is this insurance cover and how does it help the elderly in their medical needs?
A Quick Definition
Medicare supplement insurance is a premium cover used to pay for out-of-the-pocket costs related to various health care needs. It is a separate cover taken out by people from an independent insurance broker. This cover, also known as Medigap, can be used in conjunction with Original Medicare benefits (Parts A, B, C and D) to alleviate the burden of high medical costs and fill in any payment gaps that Medicare cannot cover.
Does Medicare itself run the Supplement Plans?
No. Private insurance companies own and operate Medicare supplement covers. They determine the prices and premiums that their clients have to pay to avail of the benefits of each particular supplementary package they offer. The benefits that clients will enjoy with every Medigap supplement package remains the same across all companies, thanks to the strict regulations set by the federal government. However, the price for each package cover may vary greatly among insurance companies.
Who can Use Supplementary Covers?
People enrolled in Original Medicare are allowed to take out an additional Medicare Supplement or Medigap package. Since Medicare is an entitlement program where majority of the population get enrolled automatically after working and paying taxes, most Americans become eligible to get another private Medigap coverage. However, those who are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans are not entitled to claim supplemental Medigap policies.
When to Enroll
Eligible clients may start enrolling in the Medigap plan policy during a certain Open Enrollment period. The Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts on the first day of the month where the client turns 65 years old. Said enrollment period lasts up to six months. During this six-month enrollment phase, insurance companies are not allowed to refuse sale of the Medigap supplementary plans, nor can they charge clients higher premiums because of pre-existing health conditions.
What it Covers and What Isnt Included
Medicare supplement plans pay for health care expenses that the Original Medicare plan doesnt cover. Coinsurance, copayments and deductibles are among those care costs that Medigap shoulders. Items not included in the Medigaps scope are payments for hearing aids, eyeglasses, long-term facility care, and private duty nursing service.
Special Considerations about Medicare Supplement Policies
Clients should see to it that the policy they intend to take out is clearly labeled as Medicare Supplement Insurance. The independent broker selling the supplement insurance is paid a monthly premium for the policy, in addition to the monthly Medicare Part B premium payment. As long as the client pays this monthly premium, the independent broker cannot cancel the policy. Also, the supplement policy covers only an individual person. Spouses arent allowed to share a single policy. They need to buy separate individual policies for each person.
Supplement Plans to Keep Health Care Costs Low
The ultimate goal of Medigap supplement plans is to keep their clients medical expenses low through prepaid policies. These plans helped several elderly patients deal with hospital bills and medical care costs. Shopping around for an affordable supplement plan is advised to make the most out of this additional health care benefit.
