Medicare provides hospital insurance better known as Medicare Part A. Part A gives in-patient medical services, including but not limited to the following - nursing homes, inpatient care inside hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and even critical access hospitals. It doesnt include custodial or long-term care, but may be included once certain requirements are satisfied.
You may not need to pay for Medicare Part A monthly premiums because of your payroll taxes deducted from your paycheck. However, you need to settle a yearly deductible before Medicare can cover your hospitalization costs.
What is Covered?
When medically necessary and given by a health care provider assigned by Medicare inside a facility approved by Medicare, these services are covered:
Hospital Stays - Medicare Part A covers these, including general nursing, meals, semi-private room with various hospital supplies and other services.
Home Health Services - These may come with limited part-time care with services, such as occupational therapy (physical or continued), intermittent skilled nursing care, and speech language pathology, among others. Medical equipment that you need for treatment (e.g. hospital beds, wheelchairs, oxygen and walkers) may also be covered.
Blood Transfusions - Hospitals often get their blood from blood banks without any charges, so if you need blood as required by your stay, then you dont need to worry about paying for it or replacing the blood. Part A covers 80% of the additional blood you need after paying for the first 3 pints.
Hospice Care - This coverage is for those who are terminally ill. Most drug costs are usually covered, together with various medical and support services. Hospice care is often provided either at home or at the facility where the patient resides.
Skilled Nursing Facility Care - Services will be covered for 100 days at most. Medicare will pay for 100% of the costs from day 1 to 20, and youll pay $157.50 per day from day 21 to 100. Youll pay for all costs from day 101 onwards.
Eligibility for Part A
Youll be eligible for Medicare Part A upon meeting the following qualifications:
You have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS / Lou Gehrigs disease.
Youre a disabled individual receiving disability benefits.
Youre already receiving retirement benefits.
Youre diagnosed to have end-stage renal disease or ESRD.
Youre at least 65 years old, a US citizen or a permanent legal resident for five straight years.
If you dont enroll immediately upon finding out eligibility, then you may be charged a late penalty upon signing up. On the other hand, you can still sign up even if youre not yet eligible you can pay the premium instead of going for the premium-free plan.
Enrollment for Plan A
Those who reach 65 years old and are being given benefits by the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) or Social Security benefits usually gain automatic enrollment for Medicare Part A. Benefits start on the first day of the month after you turned 65.
If you dont qualify, then you have to sign up during the Initial Enrollment Period through the Social Security office or website. Dont wait until the last minute to enroll. You may lose time and wait for the next enrollment period to finish being enlisted.
