Basic Facets of Lean Six Sigma
Increasing gains and reducing losses are the main goals of every business. At first glance, these objectives seem easy to accomplish but in reality, fulfilling them requires complicated processes. In the 1980s, however, the complexities in business operations were regarded as setbacks and not leverage. As a response, Bill Smith, a pioneering engineer from Motorola company, formulated the Six Sigma in 1986. Six Sigma is a series of techniques and tools aimed at decreasing waste.
Two years after the introduction of Six Sigma, John Krafcik's article about lean production system (to which the term lean in lean manufacturing and lean enterprise where derived from) was published. Krafcik's article proposed the idea of streamlining the processes involved in the production of goods. In 2002, Robert Lawrence, Jr. and Michael George wrote a book that advocated the combination of the two concepts, simply called lean six sigma.
Lean Manufacturing
The term lean from lean six sigma may be coined in 1988 by Krafcik, but the ideas behind it were already practiced probably years or decades earlier. Unlike Six Sigma, which was initially conceived from and for the industrial sector, the foundation of lean principles came from centuries-old Japanese culture, which emphasizes simplicity. Toyota, a well-known Japanese company, also devised their own sets of techniques that are quite similar to lean principles.
In fact, lean manufacturing borrowed the concept of 7 types of waste from Toyota. Eliminating the said types of waste will result to a simpler, faster and more efficient process in production.
Six Sigma
If lean manufacturing was based on cultural principles, Six Sigma has more to do with statistics. The term Six Sigma refers to the maintenance of 6 standard deviations from the process mean. In statistics, it could mean allowing only 3.4 defects per 1 million finished products. It can operate as technique or a goal in itself. By following this concept, you can expect production defects to lessen.
The Combination
Lean six sigma highlights reduction in waste and defects. It is a step closer to cutting losses and increasing gains. Both of the concepts complement each other. Aside from both aiming at reduction, lean six sigma also gears towards accelerating production by eliminating the 8 types of waste. The 8 types of waste in lean six sigma are known by the abbreviation TIMWOODS.
Originally, the 7 types of waste from Toyota include transportation, inventory, motion, waiting, overproduction, over-processing and defects. Six Sigma added skills as a type of waste. Eliminating the waste entails reducing production costs and defective goods while at the same time, improving the quality of products and the efficiency of the process.
Levels
Practitioners of lean six sigma are classified into different levels similar to the martial arts judo. The levels are called belts such as master black belt, black belt, green belt, yellow belt and white belt. White belters and yellow belters are just starting out to understand the concept. Green belters, on the other hand, are those who are already practicing the basic tools.
Black belters are those who are fit to become project leaders while master black belters are those who have extensive experience in applying the said concept. Their experience permits them to teach the concept to eager learners.
