The integration of lean six sigma into project management seems to be promising. The success of this combined system in various fields has gained the interest of many project management practitioners and organizations. What is a project? What is project management?
A project is an individual or collaborative endeavour that consists of tasks to be executed over a period of time and within certain cost, requirements and limitations. Project management is the discipline involved to complete a project. It is the application of knowledge, skills, techniques, methodology and experience to achieve the results specified by the client and fulfill the requirements of the stakeholders. It goes through a series of stages namely: initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing of work. The project includes the scope, time, cost, and quality as the primary constraints. While other constraints involve integration, procurement, human resources, communication, and risk and stakeholder management. In managing projects, these constraints should be carefully considered to reduce risks and complications.

Lean six sigma (LSS) is the methodology that combines the lean enterprise and Six Sigma to get rid of or reduce the 8 types of waste: transportation, inventory, motion, waiting, overproduction, over processing, defects and skills. Its concept was first published in Lean Six Sigma: Combining Six Sigma with Lean Speed by Michael George and Robert Lawrence Jr. It emphasizes the use of Lean method and tools in detection and removal of waste and then follows the use Six Sigma discipline to remove process variation and reduce defects. It also uses a striking number of tools and techniques, many are from earlier methodologies which makes it familiar and easy to learn. LSS organization structure is defined by belt levels: white belt (lowest), yellow belt, green belt, black belt and master black belt (highest).

Lean Six Sigma and Project Management
The use of LSS in PM contributes a series of troubleshooting tools and techniques. Meanwhile, project management makes its contribution in terms of monitoring and tracking the project's development.
Six sigma is more oriented toward solution of problems at the source and prevention of their recurrence, as opposed to attempting to control probable causes of failure in the project. In LSS, the problem is first defined. Data is then collected to clarify the problem at hand and analytical tools are installed to find problem at the root cause. After careful decision-making, a solution is formulated and implemented. And to control the problem from recurring, operations are subject for improvement. With a broader toolkit like the one LSS have, it is easier to tackle complex business problems. Uniting lean six sigma methodologies with the traditional project management procedures can be powerful and efficient.
In conclusion, Six Sigma clearly complements project management. When organizing project management tasks with lean six sigma, the results are likely to be exponentially higher. Both disciplines intensify the value of one another and can be said to be best applied together to produce successful business results.
