How to be a PMP?
Being a project management professional (PMP) is one of the most wanted jobs in organizations at present. This position comes with great responsibilities yet adequate compensation. Being one demands experience and skills in both leadership and managerial functions, thus, a certification is currently required as proof of one's capability to be a PMP.
The certification has set requirements as to the person's experience and expertise in leading projects. People of varying levels of capability and experience can apply for different tiers, such as project management professional, associate project manager and entry-level project manager.
The PMP is mainly in charge of managerial and leadership duties in a project, which is a set of short-term activities with its own budget and team of workers aimed at meeting a common goal. A project team is a group of people with different tasks and schedule to meet, and the project manager is the one who supervises it. He or she acts as the representative of the administration and makes decisions on everything concerning the project.
Project management decentralizes the decision-making power of company executives and assigns it to project managers. This way, the executives can focus on other major concerns in the company while the project teams function independently and efficiently.
The project manager is responsible for the completion of the project. He or she makes sure that the planning, implementation and elimination stages of the project are satisfactorily done. The PMP needs to have the qualities of a good leader and manager to perform his or her duties effectively. As a leader, he or she must be powerful and should inspire the members of the team to do their task accordingly.
As a manager, he must be problem-solving oriented to solve possible constraints on cost, scope and schedule. This is why he should get a certification to prove his capability for the position, for it demands expertise and experience to deliver.
Today's job industry is filled with opportunities for professionals from various fields to become a PMP. More companies are applying the project management approach especially in marketing and production. Although the position is available only for seasoned and experienced professionals in their respective fields, new graduates should not be discouraged. They should start working on entry level positions and work their way up to managerial level.
Joining small to medium companies is also a good option, because such working environments are conducive for learning while also letting them perform relevant roles in projects of various sizes.
Everyone has to start somewhere. Even the highest-paid PMP once started as a trainee. People who dream of being one must decide to work in a company where he can acquire the skills and experience of the position he plans to covet for the future. An important aspect of achieving the position is to start your career path with a clear picture of your goal and secure a job, which will lead you there.
It's a good thing that any professional can become a PMP, as long as he has the required minimum leadership and managerial experience set by the certification standards.
