The flexible printed circuit board (PCB) is designed to fit packaging geometry where the standard PCB cant. Gadget designers have long been using this technology to give them enough latitude to build device interiors that conform to the present needs of end consumers. Flexible circuit technology traces its history to the earlier designs of the likes of Thomas Edison in the early goings of the twentieth century. So even before tech giants can boast of electronic devices that continue to challenge the status quo of gadgets and appliances, non-commercial scientific endeavors have long been using the technology to advance the cause of mankind.
Computers have progressed from two-large-rooms-sized equipment to desktop computers that can now fit inside a typical room within an American household to laptop computers that can be brought to the office or anywhere else to mobile devices and smartphones that has a functionality a thousand fold better than the computers that was once thought powerful enough that only NASA can build. This miniaturization trend in electronics has increasingly become popular among big-time appliances brand. Radio became transistors. Transistors became Walkman. Walkman became CD players. CD players became iPods and its not bound to stop there.
This latest trend of miniaturization and mobility is made possible by a special kind of PCB: rigid flex PCB. These boards use Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) applied to flexible polyimide foils with an average thickness of 50 micrometers. These materials can endure high temperatures allowing further integration into high powered electronic devices. Rigid flex PCB uses rigid base materials to pure flex PCBs copper-clad base. These allow gadget designers to create intricate wirings through any soldering method.
The three different ways to create an efficient system using rigid flex technology in PCBs are as follows:
Homogenous System: These circuit boards use identical boards built on all of the boards rigid portions. Flexible board layers are integrated throughout the system that allows better wiring density than other PCB. By eliminating connector footprints or soldering pads that act as connecting points, this system saves some much-needed space for other device parts.
Heterogeneous System: These circuit boards are used for simpler gadget designs that require fewer connections to prevent wiring errors. Wiring harness are either plugged in or soldered to a rigid circuit board.
Partially-homogenous System: These rigid flex PCB systems are similar to homogenous systems but they have detachable sub-system boards.
Rigid Flex PCB uses components that are highly dependent on mechanical factors like configuration and installation procedures. These boards are first assembled, built, and tested as a flat surface. Similar layers are attached to the board before the PCB enjoys considerable flexibility.
Compared to standard Flex PCB, the rigid flex PCB uses less space owing to its three dimensional wiring capability. This eliminates the need to use connecting cables and connectors. Cross-sectional connections improve the transmission of signals through different layers. Space often allotted for wiring can now be used to assemble valuable components thus decreasing logistical complexity within the system. The overall weight of the electronic device using the technology is significantly reduced.
