After the financial crisis during the Bush administration, corporations belonging to the previously robust American manufacturing industry relocated to China to cut labor costs because of the countrys significantly lower minimum wage. Companies realized that the money they can save by transferring their factories to China could be reinvested to research and development.
While offshore manufacturing sites dont bode well for most Americans who could have been employed by a company had it stayed in American soil, most of the electronic devices that are distributed and sold in the country that are made in China are still patronized by Americans. Among the growing concerns against China-manufactured products are issues on quality. In order to drive costs further down, some manufacturers skipped implementing strict quality-control policies during the early stages of site relocation.
No stranger to this set-up, American printed circuit board (PCB) makers have long established a manufacturing base in Chinese soil to cut down labor costs. PCB manufacturers contend that the industry is cost-intensive. Hence, they would rather invest in quality raw materials needed to create PCB boards than pay higher wages. These companies follow a simple manufacturing practice that espouses a philosophy of products being just as durable as the quality of each of their individual parts and raw materials.
Among those that established its manufacturing site in China are PCB suppliers of major electronics brands. These China PCB manufacturer companies opined that in order for them to continue fostering good relationship with the giants of the tech industry, they must offer an efficient means to deliver interior and raw materials without inconvenience and delay.
For example, if a big brand called SamPle orders a single batch of 10,000 custom-made flexible PCBs from a PCB company based in Seattle, it usually takes a week to manufacture the batch and at least another week to ship the boards all the way to Shanghai, where SamPles plant is based. If the same PCB company relocates to Shanghai, then the two-week lag time will be reduced from two weeks to just several hours.
In response to the growing distrust against Chinese-made products, China PCB manufacturer management teams impress upon their workers the importance of ensuring quality. Brand managers had to create ad campaigns that speak highly of quality and design to weather any possible backlash from consumers and third party clients. When major brands began following the direction of their manufacturing peers, corporations that manufacture product interiors (such as motherboards, CPUs etc.) and raw materials followed suit.
Its easy to understand that, despite efforts poured in by quality managers, an ordinary China PCB manufacturer can still be struggling with quality issues. This is why companies now invest on training the manpower to develop the necessary skills to build quality products. Most of these efforts paid off as big companies report a fraction of 1% in terms or replacement requests.
In a report penned by a China PCB manufacturer, issues on quality for standard and flexible PCB have been addressed several months after the company committed to training their employees, to raising the wages of employees based on performance and to implementing safety standards that allows for secured labor. Not all companies within the tech industry embraced fair American labor laws but the report said that a China PCB manufacturer who invests in its employees will reap the benefits of these practices while still saving enough amount of money that can be channeled to the advancement of the companys vision.
