Bikram Yoga is a system of yoga developed by Bikram Choudhury. It takes inspiration from Hatha Yoga. However, the main difference is that the 26 poses in the Bikram Yoga are done inside a room with high temperatures of 40 C degress (104 F degrees). Bikram Yoga is recommended to be done with a certified instructor. It is also suggested to wear suitable hot yoga clothing.
Who is Bikram Choudhury?
Bikram Choudhury is an Indian yoga instructor. He grew up in Calcutta, India. At the age of five, he started working with Paramahansa Yoganandas brother Bishnu Ghosh. He won the National Indian Yoga Championship for three consecutive times in his teens. He migrated to the United States in the 1970s. There he established yoga studios in California and Hawaii. According to reports, he developed the Bikram Yoga to mimic the temperature in India.
How Does Bikram Yoga Work?
Bikram Yoga combines the benefits of the Hatha yoga positions and hot temperatures. It also uses the tourniquet effect. The balancing, stretching, and moving of the muscles throughout the body creates a pressure in the bodys blood supply. When this is released, it creates a lock gate effect which causes the blood to rush and flush out unwanted substances within. Pressure is also added to the heart in certain poses. The muscles are contracted therefore encouraging muscle strength. The high temperature also helps the joint ligaments to stretch further than usual. The lymph nodes are also massaged and white blood cells are circulated throughout the whole body.
Before and After Class
Here are some tips of what to do before a Bikram Yoga Class
Wear appropriate hot yoga clothes
Bikram Yoga clothing permits ones body to stretch further than ordinary clothing made from tough fabric like denim and leather. Bikram Yoga clothes free one from the constraints of ordinary clothes. It is more flexible and stretchable. A lot of fitness stores offer hot yoga pants, hot yoga shorts and hot yoga leggings. There are even those who sell these items online. Some recommend wearing hot yoga leggings than hot yoga shorts but any will do.
Bring towel
After learning what to wear to hot yoga, it is also important to note to bring a towel with you. Because the session will be held in a room with soaring temperatures, profuse sweating is expected.
Bring water
Because of the heavy sweating, you will lose hydration and electrolytes. It is therefore recommended to bring a bottle of water preferably those infused with electrolytes.
On the other hand, here are some things to expect after a Bikram Yoga session:
You will feel tired
As with any workout session, you will feel tired. The poses may seem to not be as intense as compared to the cardio workouts you normally do. But Bikram Yoga is as tiring.
You will sore
The stretching brought about by the different poses will cause your body to be tender. This is normal and is actually a good sign. This means that the workout worked and this is your body adjusting to the poses.
You may feel dizzy and nauseous
It is not unusual to feel nauseous, dizzy and light-headed after a session of Bikram Yoga. The intense heat and poses may take a toll on newbies. However, this can be simply remedied by taking a nap, eating healthier and sleeping at least 8 hours a day. Also do not forget to drink water infused with electrolyes.
