The sports betting industry, including the NFL betting scene, relies heavily on the balancing of public activity and statistical probabilities to achieve optimal economic results. This is made possible by the use of trends. An NFL sports bettor who understands NFL betting trends would know when and how to bet, thereby giving himself/herself the best chances of winning in every wager. This article discusses NFL betting trends and suggests courses of action to make the most out of them.
NFL betting trends
Betting trends are tools that show bettors, which team the public is betting on in a particular match and the odds placed by sportsbooks.
Team preference is expressed in terms of percentages, for example: 75% of the bets voted for Team A, while 25% of the bets were for Team B. Odds are expressed in plus-minus terms. These odds are determined by sportsbooks after considering the inflow of bets for both teams.
An example should be useful: say, the odds are -15 for Team A and +15 for Team B. This means that Team A is actually favored to win the match, but for a bet on Team A to win the wager, Team A must beat Team B by 16 points or more. Similarly, for a bet on Team B to win the wager, even if Team B loses the match, Team B must either (1) lose by less than 14 points, or (2) win over Team A by whatever margin.
It is a little confusing at first. The simplest way to do the math to subtract or add the number to the score of the team betted on, then determine if the team still won. For example, Team A beats Team B, 40-30. If you betted on Team A, subtract 15 from their score and you get 25. This is less than Team Bs score (30), meaning, you lost on your bet. However, if you betted on Team B, assuming the results are the same, add 15 to Team Bs score and you get 45. This is greater than Team As score (40), meaning, you won on your bet.
The odds change with time, depending on the bets trickling in. Accordingly, the changes can be plotted to form the betting lines, and the charts then show the betting trends. Based on the information derived from these NFL betting trends, is it possible to form plans as to how to bet in almost any kind of bet: spread bets, money line bets, over/under bets and parlays, etc.
How they Move
Still using the example above, when people see that Team A is clearly favored to win, other bettors who have not yet placed their bets will most likely put their money on Team A and not on Team B. To encourage bettors to still bet for Team B, sportsbooks will adjust the spread or the margin from -15 to -16, or whatever figure it deems to be reasonable. Because the margin by which Team A has to beat Team B increased, some bettors will probably go to Team B. All in all, there will be more bets the more reasonable and middle-grounded the odds are. This eventually means more profit for the bookies.
What to do to get the most out of trends
A strong understanding of how NFL betting trends work should be accompanied by the following actions to hit the most likely bets:
Know the sport well.
Know the different teams.
Back up your bets with data This is where your high school and college statistics come in.
Use your perks wisely You can use free bets anytime, but try using them in matches with the highest rewards.
